Man, so there's word* that if we get enough snow tonight, the office will be closed tomorrow.  Please, winter, please, just give us a huge fucking snowfall.  Please.

I've been arranging a trip for this scientist to come here on Wednesday and give a talk, but it's looking like he may not be able to come because of the snow effing with interstate travel.  In my e-mails to him I'm all, "Well, we'd love to have you here, but of course, I understand if the weather stops you" but secretly I'm all like "C'mon DITCH THE TALK, DITCH THE TALK, LET ME HAVE A SNOWDAY"

LECTURE: CANCELLED

OH YEAH

Goddammit, I wish I could call a snow day here tomorrow. I probably could, the boss is out of town, but he'd probably disapprove.

man if I could have gotten away with staying home today I probably would have but there was a problem with a server in the office first thing that required hands-on access to fix, oh well

At least the bike ride was fun.  No beardcicle pics though.

The main reason I'm hoping to be snowed in tomorrow is that I might actually get a chance to work on music.  When you get three hours a week, tops, to use a computer unmolested, getting snowed the fuck in is a thing to look forward to.

when I was little we used to have regular power outages.  I kind of miss those times--playing boardgames by candle light.  not wishing for a power outage now, mind you, but it is nice to take a break from modern contraptions once in a while.

I hear that.  Books, board games, things like that are all awesome fun in a power outage.  I kind of relish being "stuck" inside.

See, I kind of look at them more as a reminder of how nice it is to have a big laptop battery and the internet on your cell phone. But y'know, modern contraptions are kind of my thing.

When I was in HIGH SCHOOL there were few laptops and only Zack Morris-style mobile phones.

There was definitely a lot of cell phones around when I was in high school, but people seemed more ashamed of them, I guess. I don't really remember any texting/game playing/music listening going on in sight. That was what your TI-83 was for. I started carrying my laptop around senior year, but I was basically the only one in the school who did that.

I thought it was pretty sweet that my friend in high school had a pager.

I can remember the tipping point for cell phones, at least in Athens, GA. When school let out in May of 2000, there were cell phones around and the idea was really catching on. When fall semester began that August, EVERY MOTHERFUCKER ON CAMPUS had a cell phone and you rarely (literally, rarely) saw a student on their way to class who wasn't either talking or texting or dialing.

I remember it very well because I was so shocked. It was a damn revolution. I held off until late 2003. It's absolutely amazing how far cell phones have come in the past 7 years.

It's absolutely amazing how far cell phones have come in the past 7 years.

It's true, even weirder from my perspective. No-one had cell-phones when I was first at uni. There was one guy who had one in the early 90s (remember they took a lot longer to catch on here) and it looked like your regular cordless phone handset. The fact that I can now surf the web from my phone blows me away sometimes. 2000 was when I finally caved and got one (my ex had one for work). I was pregnant with the now 9 year old, and it seemed like a good idea to have an easy way to ring him if I needed to. I'm on my third handset.

I think a snow day sounds great today. It's going to be 32, and it's already unbearably hot in my house...I don't mind blackouts, but I've never had to endure them in sub-freezing conditions. The main annoyance about them here is losing power to your freezer, which wouldn't be a problem in northern winters...

Didn't want to drive the new(er) car 'cause it doesn't have a front plate mount and we already got one ticket for that downtown so I took my stepfather's car that I've been borrowing and which has been sitting in our driveway and I'm pretty sure I cleaned well over a foot of snow off the car, standing in drifts up to my knees.
