it was almost 80 today. i spent the day napping and reading on the beach in san clemente.  i keep forgetting it's january.

It's been snowing pretty heavily so we went for a walk to the awesome park down the street and made snow angels and ran around like idiots. I lost my wallet somewhere in the snow and thought we'd never find it, but finally M did. We built a snowman and gave him a wispy old man beard. It was awesome.

We had a lovely, warm, sunny weekend.  Then the weather remembered that it's supposed to be winter now, and it's been chilly and dreary.  Blech.  Just barely drizzling, all day.

I finally finished shoveling the drive.  Word to the wise, that knee-high shit is doable but when you're clearing waist-high shit, you gotta take it off in layers else you fuck up your shoulder.

Yeah, very true.  Knee-high can even be fun to shovel, but yeah, waist-high is a multi-trip endeavor.

But I am sitting at my desk, looking out at a lovely view of the snow, and finally working on this paper that's be haunting me for several months. So there's that.

Everything was covered in like half an inch of ice this morning!  It was very slippery.

Yeah, that is exactly why I am so very sick of the half-assed winters we've been having (and have had, so far, this winter).  It's a huge pain in the ass, but not enough of a pain in the ass for anything other than schools to shut down.  On that note, NYC schools?  World-class sissies.

So the likelihood of my street ever getting plowed is probably close to zero. But I do live across the street from a parking lot for a very popular restaurant. They hired a plow to clear their parking lot and part of the street, so now cars can drive the wrong way down a one-way street to get into their parking lot. Also, they dumped a lot of snow all around a van in a handicapped parking spot.



This also means that there's even more snow on the part of the street that hasn't been plowed! This is the scene immediately to the right of the photograph above. My car is the blue station wagon. It will be possible to dig it out—but the snow is piled so high in the street I won't be able to go anywhere.

I actually like giant snowstorms:  1) Excuse to do nothing but drink beer and play video games for 24 hours, 2) Get to feel like I'm doing my Manly Duty when I spend forever shoveling, 3) Day off class.

But damn, this snowstorm is making me seriously want to strangle everyone in this city.  If you can spend an hour-and-a-half shoveling out your car, you can do more than the foot-wide path down your sidewalk.  And, ugh, the yuppies next door hired a plow and had it plow our street, but only up to the alley, then the alley, but only up to their garage.  So now they can get in and out but there's a giant pile of snow halfway down the street there's no way I'm going to be able to get our car past, and a giant pile of snow down in the middle of our alley that I can't walk past.
