I wanted to point out that my friends in What Happened To Your Fire, Tiger? have put out a pretty great album.

one bird two bird- Masami Akita/Mats Gustafsson/Jim O’Rourke
this one is good I think, I put it on while I was walking around today, but I kept forgetting I was listening and would just repeat "one bird ! two bird ! one bird ! two bird !" over and over in my head while thinking about the cover.

I am about to go fucking NUTS on Giant Sand. Just thought I'd mention it. Their most recent record,
Blurry Blue Mountain
, was one of my favorites last year but I was unfamiliar with the rest of their work.
I've toyed around with the idea of digging deeper into their catalog, even prior to BBM's release, but for various reasons kept putting it off. Now is the perfect time, however. Fire Records--a British label, I think--is putting out deluxe reissues of every single Giant Sand album, and they are freaking gorgeous:
Quote
Giant Sand has a massive catalog going back to 1985, but everything prior to 2000’s Chore of Enchantment is out of print. Fortunately, the Tucson-based band has a new deal with British label Fire Records that includes a comprehensive reissue program that will over the course of a year see all the group’s work brought back to record store shelves with new covers, bonus cuts and autobiographical liner notes. Thus will one of indie rock’s pioneering talents be introduced (hopefully) to a new generation.

I've always meant to dig further into Giant Sand too, but I'm not so sure about the new covers idea. I'm sure there's a legal reason for it or something, but I'm just not keen on the notion.

Oh, they're based on the original covers. Google-image "Giant Sand Center of the Universe" and you'll see what I mean (the old cover has the words outside the heart, the new one inside). They just tightened up the design and put some of them in slipcovers and such.

I think the "tightening up" is a bit hit-and-miss, and in some cases quite pointless. I'm excited to get some of these reissues when more cash comes my way though! My collection's certainly missing some of the classics. Oh, and don't neglect Howe Gelb's solo discography, it's got a lot of stuff that's just as good if not better than what goes on Giant Sand records. I think Fire is also due to reissue all that soon.

Yep, they've got 30+ reissues on deck. So far, they've made it through 94's
Purge & Slouch
. Next month is
Glum
,
Goods & Services
, and
Black Out
, and that will bring them up to the 2000s.
I think they all look great. I mean, some of those original sleeves, particularly from the 80s, were just awful-looking. The ones that looked good to begin with --
Center of the Universe
and
Ramp
, for instance -- are largely the same as they were, with minor touches to maintain stylistic consistency.

The first one has arrived! It's gorgeous!
Done in the mini-LP style. Nice, heavy card stock. Engaging liner notes by Howe Gelb. Great design throughout.

Not sure about that one, but the aforementioned
Black Out
is a previously-unreleased collection of acoustic out-takes, so there's hope.

Ho shit! Looking for that ASAP!
For those who don't know, Gridlink is Jon Chang of Discordance Axis and Bryan Fajardo of Kill The Client, plus Japanese guitarist Takafumi Matsubara. Their first record was incredible. This is gonna be great.

My favourite local country band, One Hundred Dollars, have their second LP coming out next week.
So I think I'm going to have to hit their album release show next Friday.
