Those convertible things really do suck it hard. We have one, and it's pretty much worthless. You should just buy a tiny ShopVac.

Are you talking about cleaning up Finn-related messes? They're pretty good for that, and he'll love using it too...

This is taken from an article in Choice magazine, that you probably can't see, and reviews models you can't buy...(sorry) I keep forgetting if there's some kind of independant consumer review body in the US, they're usually good as long as they're consumer-based.

Handheld vacuum essentials

    * Switch An On/Off switch is easier for continuous operation than a trigger that needs to be held down.
    * Adjustable nozzle/attachments These make it easy to adjust the cleaner for different tasks, such as cleaning crevices and other awkward locations.
    * Filter This should be easy to remove and clean or replace.
    * Fallout flap This prevents dirt falling back out of the vacuum when you carry it with the nozzle facing downwards, such as when moving between cleaning tasks. The Dyson has no flap and the Shop Vac and Vax Marvel have ineffective ones, so with these you should avoid carrying the cleaner nozzle downwards.
    * Charging time The quicker the charging time, the sooner you can reuse the cleaner. The Breville and Shop Vac don’t state their recharging time.
    * Battery Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) and lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are generally more environmentally friendly than nickel-cadmium (NiCd) and lead-acid batteries.

Well, I have hardwood floors, so I'd mostly be using it to pick up dustbunnies in corners and under the sofa. No heavy duty stuff--I can still sweep. Also, Finn is a highly productive crumb machine.

Interestingly the models they tested really varied in their "hardwood floor pickup" tests, so you might want to check that with the locals...

Eh, in my experience the dustbuster-style ones suck (double for the Karim Rashid pod of the month at Target) and the ones with brushes are a pain in the ass to use. Honestly, I'd just get a small bagless upright with decent attachment support. And I mean, you maybe have a rug or two that might benefit from a vacuum with a brush?

I have one of these: http://www.dirtdevil.com/products/details.aspx?id=UD40230 and it worked fine for sucking up dust bunnies and cleaning the occasional rug. I have yet to replace the filter.

Mine came with a brush attachment and a long skinny attachment. Worked fine with me and I had cat hair.
