Be professional and friendly, and know your shit. There's nothing else to it. Hopefully the being chill comes from knowing you know your shit.

'cause basically a phone interview, in my experience, means they're going to quiz you on your shit, to find out if your resume is bullshit, to get a feel for how well you know your field, and to avoid wasting time in a face to face if you're full of shit. My experience is in a technical field though so YMMV

So, uhh...that phone interview lasted for 80 minutes
And it went
extremely
well. He asked me a few interview-ish type questions, but almost all of them were just springboards to free-flowing, wide-ranging discussions of librarianship and what it meant to us. Several times after I finished speaking, he said something like "Yes, I feel the same way," or "I've never heard it articulated in quite that way before. I believe you've hit upon something very important, etc." I mean, there's no way that conversation--that Saturday morning conversation--would've lasted nearly so long if we hadn't hit it off. By the end of the talk, we were discussing the scheduling for the position and making plans for me to meet the rest of the staff this week.
This morning, he sent me an email. He wants me to meet him in town at the local campus library (where I would be working) to talk with the head librarian and give a short presentation on patron instruction. Then a lunch date at "a nearby cafe." Then, a meeting with the main campus administrator. Then, on Thursday, I am to drive an hour or so north to the main campus to meet the provost.
Uhh...

What a shit day. I was supposed to work 7-12 to do my truck order, then come back 8-11 for inventory. Then they added a conference call that I had to be in on at 1, so I was going to to 7-2 and then 8-11. Then one of my closers called out, and since it was inventory and a lot of the college students aren't available on Mondays, there was no one else who could cover. So I ended up working 7am-10pm (they hurried my part of inventory so I could get out earlier). Bleh. The best part is that I'm on salary, so I get paid exactly the same amount as usual!

No jokes -- nobody says things like "I've never heard it articulated in quite that way before. I believe you've hit upon something very important, etc." unless they're looking to get laid.
Congratulations, you charmer.

Today I met the college's library director (the guy who interviewed me Saturday) at the branch here in town where I'd be working. He introduced me to the campus librarian and after a brief tour (it's a small library), we three sat down and had a chat about various things. I was a little nervous but warmed up to them fairly quickly and the conversation went well. Then I gave my presentation. I basically took a topic and walked a pretend-procrastinating student through a process of obtaining relevant resources, via online catalog, electronic resource listing, and various databases, demonstrating how each could be effectively searched and utilized. I got the feeling that maybe what I gave them wasn't exactly what they were looking for (maybe it should've been less real-life scenario and more presentation-ish?), but they didn't press me on it and we broke for lunch.
The director took the campus librarian and I out to lunch at a classy Thai place where we ate and talked about how underrated librarians are
. I was enjoying their company and it seemed like they were enjoying mine. After lunch, we walked over to the main building and met with the VP in charge of campus management. We soon realized we were both from Macon and hit it off immediately. He was complimentary in regards to my resume and qualifications and seemed impressed with my answers to his questions. Toward the end of the meeting, he said, "I think you'll be a good fit, I hope we can work out the details." Back at the library, we talked a little about the details--i.e. scheduling--and I was told there would be some flexibility. That was a relief.
And that was that. It went really well, all in all, but I wish I hadn't been so nervous at first. On the other hand, better that I got my nervousness out of the way today, because tomorrow I have to drive an hour or so to the main campus and meet the provost, who is basically in charge of all the libraries.
Still a little apprehensive about scheduling and whether or not I'll be able to keep some hours at my current job (something that would really mean a lot to me, and not just financially), but on the whole, I think it's in the bag.
Wow.
