I now have Propagandhi playing, and things are thus looking up in the world.

The reigning discussion around the recent Baroness record is that it is some descent into proggy oblivion. But I am listening to it now, and what I hear is a really catchy blues metal record. It's awesome!

np: New Reckless Kelly album,
Somewhere in Time
. I've never heard these guys before, but the cover art was done in a style practically guaranteed to get me wet and they're on Yep Roc, so they were 2-for-2 before I ever heard their music. It's good, too! Somewhere between DBT and Old 97s.

These Zutons fellows know their way around a hook. I bought the first album years ago after seeing them deliver one of the best performances I ever saw on Conan O'Brien's show. I liked it a lot, and I still have it on the shelf, which is sorta surprising considering the poor longevity most power pop albums have in my collection.
Found their 2nd album for $2 yesterday and rolled the dice. They still got it. Nothing groundbreaking or genuinely surprising (whereas their first album did have some of those moments), but it's tight, well-crafted power pop with an enjoyable swing.

That reminds me, whatever happened to fellow Liverpudlians, The Coral? I did read that they were all about 16 when they made the first album and basically spent the money on everything you would spend the money on at 16, so that could be the whole story I suppose. I thought they had a lot of potential though.

I remember being real psyched about the Coral when their first album came out. They did a couple US tours at the time (first supporting Supergrass, then headlining over Kings of Leon with their own first album) and everyone I hung out with was really into them at the time.
Then they never ever came back.
They're still releasing albums, apparently, and the NME seems to be the only one who pays attention to them anymore. Also, everything they released after that first album was never as exciting.
I liked that first Zutons record at first, too, but it just kinda wore off on me and I stopped listening to it altogether. I still stick by that Chinese immigrant railroad builing song, though.

This Hayes Carll album sounds a lot prettier on my nice new 180 g vinyl than it did on 192 kps mp3s.

The Soft Boys -
(I Wanna Be An) Anglepoise Lamp
If I'd been about 5 years older, The Soft Boys would've been my favourite band, no doubt.

Yeah, the Soft Boys were pretty great. I've got the 2-disc
Underwater Moonlight
as well as the 76-81 Ryko comp - I've always loved the version of "Insanely Jealous" on the comp. I was too young for them back in the day, too - I caught onto Hitchcock with
Fegmania!
I did see them on their reunion tour, though.
Did you see that Robyn Hitchcock has a
new, free single out
? I've downloaded it, but haven't spun it yet.

Atheist's
Unquestionable Presence
proves once again that you can call your album any damn-fool thing if your rhythm section hits like a laser-guided meteor shower.

Man, I agree with basically everything everybody's said since my last post. Except, sorry Aglaya, I don't know who the Denis Colin Trio is.
I didn't hear that first Coral album until a few months ago. It's pretty great, yeah.

The Darling Buds - Erotica
A bit of shame that "Sure Thing" is so stellar that it makes the rest of the album seems less good than it actually is.

No doubt.
I'm listening to the terrible Danzig records this morning...I've been meaning to combine the best tracks of V, VI, and VIII into one mix for a while now. The inspiration hit me again watching
The Hangover
--the Danzig track that's playing during the opening Vegas montage ("Thirteen") is from VI.

Got the
Nocturnal Graves / Hell Spirit split
in the mail today. Both bands deliver the goods on this one, but the Nocturnal Graves side is
great

I'll bet this doesn't shatter any illusions, but the new Brian Jonestown Massacre album is atrocious. It's about one third feeble techno beats, one third 6-minute songs of Anton Newcombe chanting "let's go fucking mental," and one third conventional rock tunes with lyrics like "All I want are your drugs/don't give a fuck about your hugs." Pretty sad, considering how good they were 15 years ago.

yeah, I mean tuned out long before this
but I'm pretty sure that whatever the hell the Dandy Warhols are up to, they win this round.
in addition to every round since 1998 or so. and I dislike the Dandy Warhols.

I only ever had
Strung Out in Heaven
by the Jonestown boys, and outside of "Wasting Away," I thought it was pretty mediocre.
I was in LOVE with "Wasting Away," though.
