Randy Newman, Good Old Boys. Even when you know what's coming, "Rednecks" never fails to prove a bit jolting.

I think thats' my vote for "best album that doesn't sound like it's trying to sound like it's trying to impress anybody with how awesome it is"

Yeah that's my favorite Randy Newman album, and "Rednecks" far and away my favorite Randy Newman song. Who else could pack so many layers of vicious irony into a three-minute ragtime tune?

NP - The Roches, s/t

Because I'm in a mellow mood today and I love this record. Winsome late-70s pop feminism + corny humor + off-kilter harmonic arrangements + the occasional staggeringly beautiful moment (the crackling electric guitar solos emerging out of the vocal harmonies in "Hammond Song")

Tusk is such a damn great record. I've been listening to it in the car lately.

"The Ledge" sends me head over heels every time I hear it, and I had a great time bashing along to "Not That Funny" on the drive home from Target just now.

Super Wild Horses - Mess Around
From the soon to be released debut on Hozac. Great all girl band from Melbourne. Saw them at Flip out fest last year, got the 7", got the T-shirt. Really looking forward to the LP. This song can be heard here:

So many wonderful Frogs lyrics, but here are my two favorites:

"Everyone's making a big deal / because we raped someone"

"Out of the mist / I kissed your drug-filled lips"

The best part of that latter one is how they crack up when they sing it.

Tough to narrow down the field, but I still get a big kick out of: "Just to hold you wouldn't be fair / Not only cavemen enjoy pulling hair."

"Nipple Clamps" just came on, yay! This is probably the best Frogs song in existence.

I could love you, I could love you, I could love you...
but you gotta want to be loved
Would you do something for me?
Could you wear those nipple clamps for me?
Wear them like you mean it

Keeping the couplet appreciation going:

White lies, blue tears
Red eyes, black fears
Listen you, and listen close
Who's yer daddy love the most?

And then the next song offers up another gem:

When they turn off these neons
I don't know what I'll do
But whiskey is winnin'
Between whiskey and you

...this is, without question, the best country album to ever come out of Athens, GA.

I think if I could ever settle on which volume of the Stax Complete Singles to buy first, I might have all three by now.

just stumbled in the door, feeling great and exhausted and also sad because I've been having a delightful time but need to now be responsible, and threw on Dinosaur Jr's Green Mind. So easily their best album that I'm not sure how anyone would dispute it, and perfect for the moment. Get me a bucket.

I'm normally an album listener but the past couple of days I'm doing the song shuffle. Refreshing or something.

Me too, although it's been more than a couple days but it's been only on my iPod (= on my bike). The track lists tend to go something like hip hop-->ambient-->country-->metal-->something foreign or classical-->indiepoprocks, and the lack of any sort of family resemblance between anything amuses me. I don't use the Genius feature.

I haven't been an album listener for years now. Everything gets shunted onto my mobile device at once, and I listen pretty much exclusively at random, skipping through filler or stuff that I don't want to hear.

I'm a huge skipper, but I've found I'm way more forgiving on song shuffle than album shuffle. My brain is OK with listening to tracks with shitty production values one at a time, but not into whole albums of it, so I'm listening to a greater variety of things than I normally do.

I have so much to listen to in terms of podcasts and music every week that I skip really ruthlessly. Usually a track has about 45 seconds to pique my interest before it's on to the next one.

Yeah, no, I'm basically an old-timer. I like albums and I like listening to them start to finish without skipping songs pretty much ever. I have been enjoying a little shuffle while riding, but that's just a novelty.
