Davy I think you'd quite like Josh Ritter. Little surprised you haven't heard him, actually.
I've always got a John Mayer-type vibe from him.
Off-base?
Finally listening to this guy, and yeah, it's not bad at all. I'm listening to the new one,
So Runs the World Away
. Quite good, actually. He's got sort of a Joe Henry/Loudon Wainwright thing going on, with sort of a Waitsian vibe to it.
Worth digging deeper, for sure.

I just got home from Donizetti's Maria Stuarda, which is an opera about Elizabeth I and Mary Stuart. I think something swordfighty and costumey got into my head, as I ended up singing "Eleventh Earl of Mar" all the way home, and had to put this on as soon as I got here
Genesis -
Wind and Wuthering
which isn't even a particularly great album for Genesis. Post-Peter Gabriel but still pretending to be Peter Gabriel's Genesis. But it has "Eleventh Earl of Mar" on it, so now I've heard that, and it's out of my head and I can move on. As soon as the album's over.

Leno Lovecraft - Raww
Just came across this. Some untill recently total unknown 18 year old NZ'er. From Whangerei apparently which only makes it weirder. Has an album coming out soon. This is probably the most promising local talent I've heard in some time.
You can hear the song here:

The The - NakedSelf
I've been delving into the dustier sections of my collection the past few days. Curiously, I only have The The's first (
Burning Blue Soul
) and last (this one) albums, generally considered their weakest. Someday I'll get around to picking up
Mind Bomb

Dear Pitchfork,
This fucking band doesn't sound anything like Pavement. Stop saying they do!
Sincerely,
davy
PS...the band's name is Woods.
Tiny Mix Tapes
is saying the same thing.

Ha! They even throw in the ol' Blitzen Trapper/
Wowee Zowee
trope for good measure.
Jesus Christ what a bunch of lazy writers.

Yeah, man I used to like Tiny Mix Tapes before they plastered their site with advertisements and stuff. Back when it was just a hobby-project of a handful of college students it was a cool deal. I never go there anymore.

I don't really read it thoroughly on a daily basis, but Tiny Mix Tapes actually still has a lot of good writing (Also, you know, AdBlock).
(Hi, Ryan! Nice to see you around)

To think that I was unimpressed with this record when it came out! Dumb!
