Miscellaneous Random Catchall Music Thread Device

New randoms! File that shit all up ins.
I wanted to share this find for anyone that still cares a whit for Nirvana: a bootleg collection that doesn't sound like complete garbage!
http://zambonisoundtracks.blogspot.com/2010/03/nirvana-chosen-rejects-2009-compilation.html
Quote
Here's an essential Nirvana set. It's a bootleg, but it absolutely destroys that piece of garbage WITH THE LIGHTS OUT any day of the week. This also has BETTER SOURCED material. The "official" box used multiple-generation dubs no better than those OUTCESTICIDE bootlegs from the 1990s, and then tried to cover up the poor sound by compressing the shit out of everything.
I don't know who JWB is exactly, but he seems to have gotten his hands on lots of pre-broadcast masters, direct tapes, and the lowest generation dubs I've ever heard. I suspect he's not far from the inner circle, quietly funneling things out he suspects will never see the proper light of day otherwise. The quality is that good.
Bunch of other good stuff in this guy's archives.

Hey I don't know if this has been discussed anywhere else recently, but I wanted to ask you guys for a hand and the help-each-other-out thread didn't seem quite appropriate. You guys are probably the only people who'll know enough about this band to help me out.
It'll take awhile to get to my point because I gotta tell the tale behind it; it was quite epic. I had what was at first the most spectacularly terrible night last night--basically after a huge fight at this party that the fucking cops broke up I ended up by the side of the road in Churton Park (middle of nowhere suburb on the other fucking side of town) with my friend and no money. Since it was about 2.30am we were like shit, we just need a ride home, and there's two of us, so we hitched with this guy called Marcus. He was about 40 or so, and looked just like a middle-aged working stiff, so we were kinda surprised when he said he needed to stop at this underground party for a bit and did we want to come. I was really uneasy about it--there were people around outside injecting god knows what--but my friend thought we'd be fine. Anyway, thank fuck I went! My god. Amazing. Anyway-- bear with me--we go in and it's all dark except for people in the hallways wearing glowsticks they'd fashioned into Lady Gaga-esque hats and wrapped around their bodies (fucking AWESOME), and this girl Lily passes me and my friend some earplugs, because this record was going to be put on that could fuck us up if we listened without protection. So they switch it on, and holy shit they weren't kidding. I felt this wave of dizziness hit me; my friend fell down and started fucking spasming in what looked kinda like a Cossack dance lying down. I freaked out and tried to help her, but then this wave of joy gets me with unbelievable force; you probably won't believe me but this music was seriously like a drug. I started crying like anything, and then over the throat-singing combined with the chainsaw/violin duo in the background I can hear a puppy barking and this guy screaming "YOU'RE---ALL---JEWS!" and I was like HOLY SHIT I've heard of these guys! It's the motherfucking Dingbats! We all moved to it non-stop til about 5 in the morning and then Marcus dropped me and my mate home. Best night ever. Marcus wants to meet me for coffee, and was talking about going to the next Rainbow festival with me and some friends, but I'm not really sure about it tbh.
Anyway, the point: I can't find this stuff
anywhere
; the librarian I asked said she's been looking for
Sorry Ma, Ain't No Retarded No More
for years, but all the record store managers she asked tried to give her a $20 fine for even
mentioning
the Dingbats in their shop. Can you guys link me any? Didn't you do a bunch of covers one time? I'd be grateful for even that; I seriously couldn't handle full-speed Dingbats every night. I'd like to hear your guys' interpretations of it anyway, the guy I was talking to after the party said each time you listen to their records it's a whole different experience and everyone's individual hearing of it is really disparate.

It was just a long-winded approach of trying to find out where the covers threads are. Also I want a copy of the original covers mix that got mailed out to everyone. Did another ever happen? If not can we make another one?

Oh man, who put that together? Greg did the artwork, but...ah! I think Blake put the whole thing together. I can try to rip mine and drop.io it, but that won't be for a little while.
But which one are you looking for? There was the original LPTJ Valadates Your Live which was covers, LPTJ Covers Each Other which is a monster 3 disc set. Then there's the long-aborted LPTJ Mortal Kollab. I think a few submissions were turned in, but it never really got off the ground, which is a damn shame.

This should get you started:
http://www.lastplanetojakarta.com/forums/index.php/topic,8872.0.html
It was to be the 3rd compilation of music created and played by LPTJers. The concept was this: each participant dreams up a wacky song title and submits it. This song title would then be randomly assigned to another LPTJer. Working from that title, the new LPTJer would write some original lyrics, and again, the incomplete song would be shuffled around to a new participant. They would then take the song + lyrics, "write" some music for it, and "record" it using whatever means available.
Then all the songs would be collected, donations would be made, and somebody would put that shit together on CD.
My guess is that most participants would be satisfied with a digital compilation this time around, but as always, I'd vote for a physical manifestation of some sort.

Man, that's kind of what I was guessing it was, and that's really rad. I can't write words to songs for shit, but I'd be super down for something like this.

Me neither. I think the ones I already submitted (and subsequently sent to an LPTJer who no longer posts here) took limerick form or something.

man, why does every thread anyone ever digs up seem to have some reminder of plainenglish's betrayal of my mitten-shaped hopes and dreams?

Oy vey -- yes yes. I'm on it. As Alistair knows, I am soooo punctual about things. (Should have those mittens in time for
this
winter, anyway!)
i think we probably need to start again with mortal kollab. maybe call it something less, i dunno, mortal?

I wouldn't be surprised if the board already knows this fact. But it's a little funny in case it does not. Watching the credits of Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey a week or so ago, I learned that no dimmer star than Howe Gelb himself taught Alex Winter and "Ted" to fake that dual lead Kiss guitar intro. Weird to me. Weird to you?

My interview with Holly Golightly and Lawyer Dave today was a lot of fun! And hour and forty five minutes from Atlanta into Madison County and off the paved roads, I got to this kind of crazy looking house--it's kind of small, except half of it is three stories high. As I pull up, she comes outside, taking the dogs out. On the property, there are two white horses in their own pens, two goats with a calf that was born three days ago, three dogs, geese, chickens and a hateful, bastard of a rooster. Holly welcomes me inside--her accent is a lot stronger than I was expecting--and then I'm at their table drinking coffee and setting up my equipment. Holly and Dave are exceedingly cool. I'm just this guy in their house and they're chatting and offering me drinks like I was a neighbor stopping by.
They're out there in the middle of nowhere because they've both kind of lost their taste for city life. They got the house for a steal and they're supporting themselves on their music alone. The new record was recorded in an empty church down the road and mixed in the shed behind the house. They're about 35 minutes outside of Athens, but they don't go down there often. "You can get olives there, so it's nice having it nearby" was pretty much Holly's only concern for the city.
After the interview, I set up some mics in their shed and they ran through some songs. I got a quick video of part of one, you can see it here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hw2ylrV9UYg
After we wrapped that up, we hung out with a neighbor of theirs that dropped by and in passing, I mentioned that I'd never fired a gun. So Dave got out the Christmas present he got for Holly--a .22 pistol--and we went back in the woods to where there was a wood and sand box target and he taught me how to load and aim the thing. At ten feet, I managed not to miss the paper target completely.
Pretty awesome visit all around. Holly offered to sell me one of her guitars, they gave me a vinyl copy of the new album and they invited me to come back.
They're going on tour this Tuesday. You should go see 'em.

I just got the sad news that the best soundguy in Atlanta--Curt Wells at the EARL--will be moving to Massachusetts soon. If you're in a band up there, seek him out, the guy's a delight to work with.

Hey, edison/alex, did I know there was a new Kim Doo Soo out? And did I know it was rerecordings of his "greatest hits" or whatever that I don't have because I only have
10 Days Butterfly?
Because I should pick that up.
Also do we know if Keiji Haino is good? Because if I'm ordering from PSF, I might as well get a second album while I'm at it, and their descriptions of his stuff make it sound totally crazy, which might be fun or terrible.

Apparently I've been mentally adding "of" into the title of Pavement's "In The Mouth A Desert" all this time. I prefer the actual title, as it so happens.

I only found out about that via a (positive) review in the latest issue of The Wire! PSF aren't exactly the best at, like, updating their website, ever. It does seem to be mostly rerecordings, so while I'd still like to hear it, I'm not rushing out to buy it. But if you do check it out, let us know!
As for Keiji Haino, I've only ever heard an extremely austere droning hurdy-gurdy piece whose name I cannot remember. It's the kind of stuff I'd be interested in digging further into but never really have the stomach for. Maybe there are more accessible records from him out there. I suspect seeing him live would be a good gateway, maybe, but there haven't been opportunities so far.

I just saw that earlier this morning (i.e. after you posted this, but before I saw your post). I'm still quite confused about what this is, exactly. If
this tracklisting
is to be believed, then a few of the songs are actually from 10 Days Butterfly, and most of the others match up with English titles I've read for Free Spirit which may or may not be correct (the album doesn't come with official English titles), so I have a hunch that there will probably be little new material in it for me. On the other hand, new recordings could still be interesting. But for you, the majority of the songs should be "new", so I concur you should probably pick it up, and then report back!
