I've never been able to get into M.I.A. because the music makes me feel really panicky. I'm not sure why. Some girl I used to have studio time with put on Arular all the time and I always had to leave the room.

This video (and song) did not improve upon my feelings.

I kinda have that reaction, myself.

It's not really the sorta thing I'd dig under any circumstances, though.

That video makes Lady Gaga's meaningless provocation look like prophecy. I think the criticism of the war on terror is weakened by substituting arbitrary racial group x for the actual victims.

Except that it's not arbitrary racial group x it's more like Jane Elliot's brown eyes/blue eyes exercise, in a "it could be you" kind of way, for people who've never had to think about that...I think it might make those people think a bit...maybe... It was a pretty disturbing vid though...

I guess, but if someone couldn't figure that out until MIA showed him some redheads getting killed in a music video nine years in, I would expect him to be so oblivious as to not even recognize the context. The political statement is so heavy-handed that it comes off as an attempt to shock and nothing more, on par with Marilyn Manson and Rambo.

Powerful, certainly.  Really visually strong.  The ginger thing is a clever move, partly because it lets the image speak with little explanation and partly because it inserts a strong swatch of contrasting colors.

Content?  Well, I don't think it's about the War On Terror at all, really.  The imagery seems totally inappropriate for that.  It makes more sense to see it in light of things like the Arizona immigration bill, say.  It's obviously not going to change minds, but it's certainly sparking conversation.

So yeah, okay, thumbs up.  Keep doing what you're doing, M.I.A.

I dunno man... I guess that they're police officers rather than military, but the kaffiyeh and the rock-throwing struck me as direct references to Middle Eastern conflicts.
