That Fireworks song is super painful. What's easycore? That's a new one for me.

It's basically pop-punk melodies assembled into a hardcore song structure. Like if you took a Youth Of Today song and went through, riff by riff, replacing the hardcore riffs with catchy melodies, then had the vocalist sing something pretty over the half-speed breakdown. Influenced by Lifetime, early Fall Out Boy, and other such bands. I actually think it's a long-overdue stylistic development, considering the fact that all the tough-guy mosh-it-up hardcore kids I used to know a decade ago listened to nothing but Saves The Day and Blink 182 in their spare time. Now kids like that can go see bands that sound pop-punk but still mosh it up.

Which actually kind of sucked for me, because when I went to the Fireworks show, the music was really good but I couldn't stand being up front because I was getting stagedived on and shoved into constantly. After two songs I was under such physical stress that I had a headache and was having trouble catching my breath. I decided to go stand to the side before I had a stroke or a heart attack or something.

Clearly I need to join a gym, because I can't handle the idea of my health issues preventing me from dancing at shows. Staying young until I die isn't supposed to mean dropping dead in a mosh pit when I'm 35 years old.

P.S. That Fireworks song above is by far not my fave by them. Here's one I like a lot better:

I Grew Up In A Legion Hall

And here are a few other examples of "easycore" at its best:

Four Year Strong - It Must Really Suck To Be Four Year Strong Right Now (By the way, don't let the scene kids singing the song at the beginning of this video fool you--Four Year Strong are the large burly bearded men who take over the lip-syncing about 4/5 of the way through the video)
Set Your Goals - Summer Jam
The Wonder Years - You're Not Salinger, Get Over It

I know you dudes all hate this stuff. And I don't CAAAAARE!

I mean, I liked all the bands you listed as influencing those bands and I still find that band obnoxious.

emo/easycore/wtfcore has the worst band name template by far. even worse than death metal bands.

Same, and I did give it a good faith effort. I did appreciate the Juggalos in the "Detroit" video. and as obnoxious as I found the song, M and I found ourselves shouting the chorus at one another hours later, so it does have an insidious catchiness to it.

Now that my brother and I are friends again, I am taking to him to see the reunited Hot Water Music. They're his favorite band of all time (at least minus those last couple records) and while I'm not nearly as into them as he is, they always put on a great show when I saw them back in the day, and I can't imagine this will be any different.

I should go see Keiji Haino, right? I only know a little of his stuff.

I've no idea what a Keiji Haino show involves these days but I imagine it would be worth going to.

I see exactly why you said that, both with the video and the musical similarity, but I felt like Sommerset had written a great setup for a killer melodic hook without ever putting the melodic hook into the song. The whole time I was just waiting for them to bust it out, and they never did. So as a result, they ended up reminding me more of Pennywise, whom I never liked all that mauch.

That was a good choice.

I mentioned how, at the Auckland show, at the beginning they had nothing going except a guitar leaning against an amp doing feedback for quarter of an hour, then one by one for the next 15 minutes the band members came on and started to play repetitive figures over the drone at ever greater volumes? Because that was worth mentioning.

Also, I found out yesterday that Aesop Rock and Kimya Dawson are playing a show together in Madison this coming Friday. Aesop Rock is an all-time favorite, and Kimya is my one allowed twee musician, and even though it's an incredibly strange pairing, I'm really excited.

The thing about Kimya is that even if her music doesn't sit well with you, she's so damn cool that you'll attend the show just to be in the same room for a while.

But I kinda like her music, too.

Man I hadn't thought about those guys in YEARS. I went to see Sommerset twice when i was 18, and at both separate shows i got my boob groped in the moshpit.

I like my job because there I am processing press releases and there is a "Modest Mouse coming to Auckland!" article and there I am squealing in my head just a little
