So it looks like The Promise Ring are playing in Chicago on 24 February. Look at my signature and tell me how excited I am.

Last night I won tickets to see the Cave Singers at the Great American Music Hall in SF.

Don't know a thing about the Cave Singers. I just knew the DJ who was giving away the tickets.

Should I be psyched?

I have seen The Cave Singers twice. Once was amazing, once was dismal. I hope you get the amazing side.

Can we talk about acts that are painfully inconsistent? Is there a better example than David Dondero?

CBS are you going to ultra? I have some friends who are I think. I'm not. Festivals wig me out. Have a blast if you do! (that is a hideous flyer but it will probably be really fun).

J. Roddy Walston and the Business are coming up this way in April, opening for Lucero. Which makes now the time for me to start listening to Lucero. I've never listened to them, but they seem like a band I'll like. Where to start?

Lucero is one of my most favoritest bands, and J. Roddy Walston and the Business rocked my 2010. This is a ticket I've got to get.

So, Lucero. Just listen to all of it, says I. and you can listen to most of it streaming here: http://www.luceromusic.com/media/music/index.php

But

So they started out as a bunch of punk rock kids who decided to start a country band, as so many of them do, and then have been working their way back towards rock & roll slowly ever since. I honestly love every one of their albums, OK well there are a couple that I maybe just like quite a bit.

The Attic Tapes is a rerelease of their first cassette-only album with a couple extra tracks, completely worth it for their cover of Jawbreaker's Kiss the Bottle but for the most part, it's slower country music, a bit sloppy, with accordion. Here's that Kiss the Bottle cover: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ydB8fG8Csg

Their self-titled and Tennessee are still fairly countrified (though rockier than the attic tapes), but cleaner, and they're clearly working toward their signature sound. Tennessee is a real favorite of mine. Here's a favorite from Tennessee (and this track clearly leans more toward the rock end of their sound): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-7MQJcH5Eg

That Much Further West and Nobody's Darlings are sort of the peak of their early sound, the country and rock elements well balanced, the songwriting tops. Here's a pretty good song from That Much Further West, set to an anime video for some reason: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2417Z1GPQmU

Rebels, Rogues and Sworn Brothers and 1372 Overton Park pretty clearly broke with their earlier sound. RR&SB adds piano and heads clearly into classic rock territory. I hear some Springsteen in the sound but that's a touchy subject for some people. Anyway, I dig it. Here's the opening track from that album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nr84yoNkoYo  And then 1372 Overton Park takes that sound and runs with it, adding horns and delving even further into classic rock territory without, I think, sounding any less like Lucero. Here's a song from that album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TALGmlQnDM (love this fan video btw)

So I guess I didn't really tell you where to start; my intention was that you click the links, listen to those videos, stream the albums if you wanted, and decide for yourself. But also, when it comes to seeing Lucero live, even the songs that are a little gentler in the album versions kind of turn into raucous stomps live.

i slept and they sold out! plus my party kid friends are slumming it in miami, already have a dive booked. count me out although it'd be a great place to meet new dance partners. there's a 50/50 chance i'll catch one weekend of coachella, a friend offered me a bonnaroo pass, and i've got 2 presales for shambhala.

Are Ghost good? Should I see them tomorrow night? Blood Ceremony are opening, which is why I'm interested, but they play here often enough.

i caught the Boston show last night. BC were great, really dug their set.

Ghost was OK, and visually appealing. the music dragged a bit, and they were super anal about photography (even though i was approved by their publicist).

Yeah, I decided to skip it. Picked up a Lucero + J. Roddy  Walston ticket, and an EMA ticket instead. Blood Ceremony some other time.
