Ugh. This is the most annoying thing P-fork has done so far this year.
The second-most annoying thing will likely be ranking
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
the 53rd best album of 2010.

Are we operating under the assumption that the score given by the reviewer represents the opinion of the magazine as a whole?

Oh, the editorial staff absolutely have final say on what gets Best New Music and what gets 10.0. There are plenty of albums that get unqualified raves and get neither.

The distortion vocoder "solo" is the only bad thing about the album. It's not a perfect album but just as good, if not better, than
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
or
Source, Tags and Codes
so, sure pitchfork, give it a 10, it won't change any aspect of my life. The end of "Reservations" is just as much of a jerk-off as the vocoder thing, really. Just different.
Would you say it's better than literally every album released 2002-2010? When you're purposefully stingy with 10.0s, you're really trying to say something definitive when you hand one out.
no, but pitchfork don't represent my opinion or any of yours. they can have theirs all they want. i've only listened to it three times and it grows with every listen. kanye has been one of the biggest artist of this decade and this album might be his best. a 10 isn't too crazy. but really, if they would have given any other album of the last 8 years a 10.0 i would have probably had the same reaction as now, which is pretty much a "a-ha, interesting".

evil red flame!
also, liking NRK stuff. less offensive than OF. there's a sampler/compilation over at their bandcamp. along with a handful of ep's.

The NRK stuff that I've heard is too friendly-backpacker for my tastes. Interesting sounds, but not as well-composed or assertive as OF.

i definitely wouldn't recommend NRK as an
alternative
to OF, they're different shades...just another crew to keep up on if you dig OF.
booo.
archandroid
is great, even though it almost begs a listen for its first half, and a separate one for its second half (i usually start the second with "oh maker," though you could do it by "suites" for conceptual coherency). on the other hand,
fantasy
feels too short, especially considering the interlude serves no purpose, and an entire song's time is the gurgling on
runaway
.
seriously digging b's beat selection on these tapes.

"Oh Maker" is one of the best songs of the year. Not many other songs can fuck with it.

Dudes, WHAT? That album is awesome. Not a 10.0 by any stretch, maybe not as good as the new Kanye (I don't know, I haven't heard the whole thing), but nonetheless, fucking awesome.
I probably would be able to convince you, too, if it stopped after track 11. The second half of the album does admittedly kill a lot of its momentum. But I think even those songs are quite good once you get used to accepting them on their own terms.

i really want to like it and have given it a few chances since I liked the Metropolis EP but it hasn't clicked yet. I listened to "Oh, Maker" because of Antero's post and liked it a lot. I'm gonna keep giving it time. While
Fantasy
clicked on first listen and I've listened to it once a day all week.

Earl is a staggering talent. He's miles ahead of almost everyone in the game, casually virtuosic, completely original.

that's ridiculous.
aside:
what does it say about me (as a parent) or my daughter, that the only music for which she's yet vocalized resounding support is young jeezy's
the inspiration
and wayne and pharrell's "yes"?

I think the new Kanye west cd is full of amazing music and mediocre to bad rapping. Unfortunate. If I ever track down an instrumental version of that album I will listen to it a lot.
