But now, given our deep sense of national shame, they'll probably never sell another memo book or wedding invitation again

Chuck Klosterman's review of the Lou Reed & Metallica record is on Grantland and it is, yep, A New Stupid Thing by Chuck Klosterman.

I ran out of steam by the penultimate paragraph but I actually thought everything up till that was spot on. I assumed by your description that he'd like it. But instead he says it's admirable for the kooky irrationality of its conceit and entirely unlistenable. Which sounds about right to me.

The first time I went to Grantland, the featured articles that day were by Klosterman, Bill Simmons, and Carles. I've never been back. I don't understand who the audience is supposed to be. The three people on the planet who read McSweeney's and also like the NFL and can tolerate Bill Simmons?

Well, I mean, my issue with Klosterman is less about how right he is and more about how he's a lazy thinker and a gross stylist.

Like this:

Quote
the closest artistic equivalent would be what might have happened if Vincent Gallo had been a script consultant for The Room. To be fair, the end of the album does have one song that's mildly OK — a dreamy, unaggressive, 20-minute exploration titled "Junior Dad" that will probably resonate with Damien Echols. There's also a track called "The View" that's pretty mind-expanding if you pretend the lyrics are literally about watching The View. But the rest of Lulu is as appalling as logic demands. If the Red Hot Chili Peppers acoustically covered the 12 worst Primus songs for Starbucks, it would still be (slightly) better than this. "Loutallica" makes SuperHeavy seem like Big Star. But this is what happens in a free society. Enjoy your freedom, slaves.

Like, that's a paragraph full of "zing!"s.

Yup!

That link led me to a wedding blog with a pictorial of a kind of goofy looking dude whose white tie and matching blue groomsmen I was scornfully deriding up until the paragraph at the bottom explaining that he has terminal brain cancer and his dying wish was to marry his soulmate before he goes. So! Bad person.

Yes, that's what the patriarchy is for, to police the type of writing that gets done.

Some people seem to dig Game of Thrones (HBO), as I learned when I confessed it didn't do that much for me, earning a scolding in the nerdosphere and a few flowery death threats in the comments. Apparently, your correspondent, a "popped-collar troglodyte," ought to be “slapped,” and he deserves to "rot in hell."

Sounds about right
