I got free drinks the other night because of the Ho Chi Minh Kissinger shirt.
I mean the bartender was drunk but I prefer my interpretation of things.

My friend's band just dropped
a five-song EP.
Listening to it is funny for me as I was in the band when I was back in LA right after undergrad. Or perhaps it would be more apt to say that I
was
the band; it was him singing and playing the world's cheapest stratocaster, me with a Bass VI and a grip of fuzz pedals, and whatever drummer we could scrounge up. We were on some Spinal Tap shit there, never played with the same drummer more than once. On one occasion, when we wound up playing an awesome impromptu set at a Caltech party, we were actually introduced to the drummer
after
the show had already begun. He was, fortunately, a fantastic improviser, so I was able to lead him through all the songs with head gestures.
Heh, good memories. Anyhow, "Neuter I" (which was written after my time) is pretty awesome, and somehow sounds exactly like a musical representation of hanging out with the dude.

Just in time for Passover, I bring you:
"Let My People Bugalú" -
the remix
Spanglish Fly's founder & trumpet player, Jonathan Goldman, is an old college friend. We met the first day of classes and bonded about Tim Buckley. By day he teaches literature at the NY Institute of Technology, specializing in modernism. Degrees from Brown & UCB.
Frankly, I'm unclear on the need for remixes. Is it for beats (or breaks?) 'Cause I don't like this mix nearly as much as
the original
, but I suspect I'm not the audience for it.

While Leopold & Loeb remains temporarily on ice (pending my completion of essays), our drummer has been lending his prowess to a group called
Lakesigns
.

The most recent thing out of my basement:
Necrocomiccon - Hot Dog Cart Hunger
. Black metal covers of 80s tunes. Can't stop laughing.

This rules, so hard. The concept, the execution, the band name, the album title, the cover art. Everything. I want to make sweet sweet love to this album

Um, I also facebook-stalked the band and posted a blog entry about the album, hope that isn't overkill

I've seen some referers in my logs coming from his site's forum but can't see the page 'cause it's members only. Hope they enjoyed my writeup
edit: I have been pimping their facebook page here and there around the internet, again, hope that isn't overkill, I really like the album though

it's totally cool, have no worries! They wanted people to listen to it and laugh, and are very pleased with the result thus far.

I'm getting really anxious/excited about playing with a potential new band. Same guitarist I was playing with for a while but it didn't work out due to drummer issues. Now we have one of my favorite local drummers (whom I've played with before, in The Spur) on board, and we're going to make some sick grind. Just as soon as we're all less busy.
A couple other projects on the horizon too, one that I'm really excited (an actual realization of Slow Wizard, my drone/noise project) and two potential ones that could be really cool but I'm a little apprehensive--a sludge band with this girl who is really cool but has never played in a loud band before, and a no-wave/post-punky kind of thing with some friends, which I wish I were a little more excited about. It'll be interesting to see what sticks and what doesn't, since there's no damn way I can be in that many bands.

Hell yes, Jeb. Good to hear there are things in the works for ya. Quit life and do them all!
We played a fundraiser show in Omaha last weekend and the crazy-good local group of video dudes who we were helping raising funds for filmed one of our new songs. They've been filming live songs of bands around Omaha and Lincoln for about half a year and they do a freaking fantastic job. It's really great to have them here, but I fear/excitedly expect that they're going to outgrow these towns.
Have a look if ya want!

Hey dudes, I partake in rock-related activities now...
There are a couple of jams here in the "band profile"
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Teenage-Strangler/203864113442
And here are some youtubes...
Hot Nightmare
Beer Party
Incision (live)
Ancient Fire (live)
We've got a 7" EP and a split 7"...we'll be recording again next month and then I'm quitting the band and moving to Australia in July.

Yeah, we're trying to avoid DIYing the mail order--but our dude has been a little spotty in keeping up stock.
