Second concert tonight, for the bad taste of love and the love of bad taste...
There's no way this guitar is gonna stay in tune out there but it's not too big a deal I guess.

First reunion rehearsal on Sunday! Ohhhhh fuck!
I dragged my electric out for the first time in months today. In remarkable tune, considering how many state lines it's crossed since I last played it. This is gonna be good.

The other night we were recording and my guitar was coming through with crazy booming bits of bass in it which overpowered the actually bassline, so we spent a while trying different stuff to try and stop that happening. Then discovered this thing called "StepFilter" in cubase which seems to cut the low-end out. Is this the mythical high pass filter that antero once advised to be used on guitar tracks? Back then I had a lame amplifier so never needed to worry about booming bass. Anyway, it seems to have done the job but I need to RTFM to work out what I should be doing to get the best noises from it. If anyone has any crucial advice, feel free to shout it at me here

Goddammit, I just have to vent for a second about how many danged shows I've either had to turn down or have had to abandoned while booking them because October through December is too busy for the rest of the band. I can't fault them for having jobs that keep them busy, but it's getting kind of ridiculous.
Our last show was in August. It's likely we won't play another one this year. And that fucking sucks.

To the mustachioed Ukulele guy- really? you post a song on your blog with such crappy digital distortion? are you too lazy to reset the levels and do another take? You're satisfied with that and so much so to post it on a blog and message board?
I mean you're not recording to tape so don't let clip. Fuck complaining about the "digital death reverb" you need to pay attention to that horrible digital clipping that you must not have cared as much about. Nobody wants to listen to that.
Not to be mean but come on people need to speak a little truth so maybe you can actually make some decent shit and post it to your blog.

who is the mustachioed ukulele guy, and who is the taking drugs guy? i clearly haven't been reading closely enough.
okay, your second post is fine because it explains something upon which the poster can improve, or which they might choose to dispute. your first is just trolling.

I think mustachioed ukelele guy is JS. Dunno who drug-taking guy is - I couldn't find a post that matched that "description". But I mean, it's still totally trolling.

Grind band didn't last long.
A number of different elements--one being that the guitarist, who wrote the songs, didn't like the drummer's style, whereas I really really liked the drummer's style, but it didn't seem very likely that I was going to be able to talk him down from firing the guy.
Also I just don't feel like I have any time right now. And I love metal, but I don't know if I want to be a vocalist in a metal band.
Though I'm kind of missing it already.
Guh. Not sure it was the right decision, but it is what it is.
Slow Wizard recording coming soon though, and that's exciting. Made my first attempt today, but I'm a novice at digital recording, and so far the results have been disappointing.
They fired the drummer for his style and kept you as a vocalist? Dude stop wondering iif you want to be a "vocalist" in a metal band and just fucking learn to be a "vocalist" in the first place.

I was hanging out with a friend this weekend as he worked sound for this usually crappy singer songwriter set at a coffeehouse. Checking out the fliers tacked up by the bathroom, I see the schedule for this other place across town. Dec. 9 - Mice in Cars.
This is a surprise.
I'd been talking to the venue about that date, but the other guys couldn't do it and I guess I never got back to the booker to confirm or cancel, so we wound up on the calendar. Oops.
After drinking on it, I've decided to play the show anyway--do a solo thing. Which I haven't done in ages. I'm getting a couple other bands on the bill and I'm trying to work it out with some of them to do a couple full-band covers, which would be awesome if that works out.
But right now, I'm excited about it and kind of scared. I'm not used to being alone up there!

Shit man, if you need another band (or an extra drummer
), hit me up!
I wish we'd surprise ourselves with secret Night Nurses shows now and again, damn.

coldforge, I wanted you to know that, listening to the new Girl Talk album -- which contains a sample from Possum Kingdom -- I now immediately think of you whenever I hear that song.

So uh, my new band is practicing for the fourth time on Saturday. Hmm, how to explain the new band? OK, back in the day, like 8 years ago now, I was in a band called Tri State Killing Spree (hence the username). I was the singer, Eric and Mike played guitar, James played bass, Tink played drums. Eric and Mike had another band called Jackie Chan that was around at the same time, and Kenny was the singer for that band. So, the new band is everyone from TSKS/Jackie Chan EXCEPT Eric and Mike (and Kyle, who was Jackie Chan's drummer. I'm confusing the issue aren't I? Annnyway...) Kenny is singing, Tink is playing drums, James is playing guitar, and I'm playing bass. I've never played bass in a band with someone who plays the way James does, so there has been a lot of me being Sid Vicious and fumbling through the bass parts like a fucking idiot, but I'm starting to get it and by the time we play a show I will hopefully be able to actually play my parts. Anyway, just felt like mentioning all of that. Hopefully my doing so doesn't cause the band to spontaneously combust.
It's kind of ironic, though, actually, because I was trying to start a band for years, and nothing ever got going. Back then, I had plenty of time to devote to it. Now, though, when I suddenly have three jobs and feel like I'm busy constantly, I'm finally able to get a band going. Crazy.

Man, I am happy to hear you're doing that! And I feel you on that last point--I am the busiest I've ever been professionally, so obviously this is when I'm gonna be in a working band.

Hooray Andrew!
I'm play a show next Thursday. I hope it goes well. I feel sort of weird still doing this solo thing that I've been mostly disconnected from over the past year. I pretty much just cram a bunch of practice in before the show and pray it goes well.
