A couple of log-ons to my Steam account today has suggests GI will not  be sleeping much in coming days due to Civ 5. Along with a large number of other people around the world I imagine.

Playing 'Chime' in the wee hours of the morning doesn't strike me as 'early to bed, early to rise' behaviour either.

Also, I've already finished two quickish games of Civ 5. I really like the change to the culture system, and I think they've made the right choice to no longer have the economic sliders. Back in the old days, your cities would generate money, which you divvied up among the various expenses, and you'd put the remainder in your pocket. The stuff you built in cities gave you bonuses to your expenditure. So, each city would have a gross income, and you'd have a global slider splitting it among research, culture, espionage (in the later expansion) and treasury (but really, only between research and treasury except in special circumstances), which then would then decide how each of the cities split its expenditure on, which is where its buildings would kick in, and then each individual city's result would be added up together for a civ-wide net research, income, etc. gain per turn. It was simultaneously finnicky and rather coarse - moving your research slider one notch from 60% to 70% could quite easily half your cash income, for instance. Now your cities generate the various gains directly, which is much cleaner and simpler while simultaneously allowing more efficacious fiddling on your part (since it's no longer the case that your industrial hub and your college town both spend 80% of their income on research). That's one example of a far-reaching change they've made that I'm finding interesting. I'll make up my mind about the combat in the following weeks, I'm sure.

Guys, I'm falling into a very deep hole here...

Best of luck. I'm about to move onto 'Prince' difficulty, where neither you nor the AI get an advantage.

Pirates

Thats All I can think of now that hasn't already been mentioned.

Pirates was on my list. Going back to when I was a kid, I've probably logged more hours with the NES version than any other video game.

Speaking of games that maybe haven't been mentioned on top tens, did any have X-Wing or TIE Fighter (or X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter) on theirs?  I spent so much time on those games back in the mid 90s, trying to get all the optional goals in every mission, my brother and I trying to compete over who could rack up the most kills on a single mission (I had the high of 612 I believe).  One time I spent a few hours taking down a Corellian cruiser with a TIE Interceptor.  Every other ship on my side was gone and I just kept at it, strafing run after strafing run (and then the crazy retreats as the entire battery of cannon opened up on me, the TIE Interceptor has no shields so you couldn't afford to get hit at all), taking out the shield generators and then battering away at the hull until it was finally destroyed.  good times

How does it play? It looks like it's easy to lose your little guy/have no idea what's going on with them guns.

#1 shooter resource: MAME
#2 shooter resource: Dreamcast

With this combination you will be unstoppable. And oh lord do I have recommendations if you're really going down this road.

Seriously, you guys, play Minecraft! The classic version is free. You, too, could be building giant stone pixel Tommy Wiseaus!

My sincerest apologies Thermo. The only fault I see in that game is in the scoring at the end. You should only be able to achieve a 100 point rating if you finished your game as a swashbuckler. But whatevs. It's still baller

Yes yes yes. That was so awesome.

I played a ton of x-wing in grade school, but I only remember being terrible.

Is there an decent, inexpensive controller out there to enhance my MAME experience?

I hadn't thought about it... I'll look for a demo on the PS3 store. I've never played the first one, or any survival horror games, since RE1.
