Hey Thermofusion: You should still use Steam for Machinarium and the Sam and Max games. That is, if you like adventure games. Entirely mouse controlled; the former is beautiful and funny, the latter is just plain funny.

If you don't like adventure games, well, never mind.

The Sam 'n Max games are awesome, and can often be bought for a song.

So New Vegas is an improvement over F3 in just about every regard, IMO. Sure it's a little glitchier, but as a seasoned Fallout player, I'm used to saving compulsively, so I ain't too worried. I haven't run into anything that could potentially fuck my game, either.
The game is more striking visually, for sure, and I like the added depth of the mechanics, like in the weapons and armor system. The world feels more populated, and there's a greater differentiation among NPCs. I feel like Obsidian captured some of that black humor that made the first two games so beloved but was largely missing from F3. My biggest gripe thus far would be in terms of difficulty: I've had to crank it up to Very Hard at times in order to feel challenged. I guess that's why Hardcore mode is there, but having to keep track of food and water doesn't sound like an added fun challenge so much as just a nuisance.

Huge open-world games always have trouble with what the difficulty should be, since the player who rushes straight from one plot event to the other is so much less prepared than the OCD guy like me who completes every side quest on the way. Morrowind is possibly the best example of that: that game is painfully easy for anybody with a clue (at least until you do the expansions), but quite amusingly the game keeps warning you about these terrifying dangers that lie in wait for you, when you are perfectly capable of killing every single creature on the game world without taking a break. The Baldur's Gate games handled this quite well, by having bottlenecks dividing the story up, making sure mid-powered characters are in the mid-way part of the game, and so in. It also made it that you can't rush to the best equipment right at the beginning and then be the personification of pale faced death (like you can in, say, Fallout 2).

Talking of Fallout 2, I've started a new game of that in naked envy at all you New Vegas players. I forgot how butt ugly these games are, and I replayed FO1 just a few months ago. The start is rather slow as well. But the wonderful way the game open up once you leave your little village and reach the first town is still quite something (even if you stop by San Francisco on the way to pick up the power amour).

Maybe there is a use for the 'karma-sutra master' perk.

Seriously though I loved the fugliness of the first two games. In an isometric format, it works to establish mood in place. In a 3D FPS like F3, it just kind of looks like shit. New Vegas does really well at splitting the difference between blasted wasteland hellscape and stuff that's interesting to look at. Hell, I think even F2 was more colorful than F3.

So my suggestion is that we consider F3 to be a spinoff titled Fallout: D.C., and just pretend that New Vegas was Fallout 3. Because this is far, far better.

Maybe what is required is some sort of scaling power slide, like changing the number and strength of foes as your level increases.

Scaling enemy levels seems to be the ideal solution. The folks who play through every side-quest, if they feel they should be rewarded for doing their thing, still end up with better gear even when drops are restricted by level.

i like to think girl is just too busy playing it to post about it (though i know for a fact that she was playing halo, not fallout, on saturday night). my epic fallout 3 session left me feeling like i'd had my fill for the time being. i'll wait for the inevitable game of the year edition (did i already say that? sorry, i am too lazy to check my previous posts).

i think they should have called it fallout 4.

Getting a little tired of tf2.  Any good maps or servers I should know about? (PC)

Wicked sad face!  I was worried that I was going to start getting tired of it, but so far (100some hours in), I am still very much into it.

re other video games, castlevania has totally failed to hook me. i mean its ok but... im on chapter 7 (a little over halfway through i think) and i cant make myself play for more than a level or two at a time.

also the demo for need for speed hot pursuit is out on 360 right now, you all should go get it. its coming later today on the ps3 and im super excited. im madly hyped for the game, but its coming out the week after codblops so im probably gonna wait to actually pick it up. anyway, it looks so damn good, and burnout is pretty much the best series of racers ever.

I am still playing Borderlands, and I told I'd pick up Fallout 3 once I was done with that... Last November.

So I've been running newvegas without a hitch really. 3 crashes to desktop. Two while just randomly walking (but had just saved) and one after dying  it crashed while loading my save but worked fine when I started it back up.

Super Meat Boy is fucking splendid. It manages the rare feat of being masochistically hard without being frustrating, and it pulls off its retro platformer style without it coming across as sloppy homage or fan-service.

Also if I've the time, I think I might d/l that Amnesia: Dark Descent game off Steam this weekend.
