another inane question

I'm trying to solve a puzzle in which letters are replaced by numbers. The key is supposed to be something simple and well known, but I have no idea. The numbers range between 1 and 3 digits. It's not a simple A=1 B=2 type thing, and it's not phone keypad as there are numbers like '105' as well as '3' or '22'. Each number represents one letter. Anyway. It's annoying me that I can't figure it out.

It'd probably be easier to help if you put in the whole puzzle.
It could be the letters of a famous song or speech or document?

Each number should represent one or two letters!

Turns out the first letter (if there were more than one) was the important one...annoying, but the bloke is pretty smart at things like that.
