My best friend eloped a couple weeks ago and his reception/party is this weekend. This dude has been my best bud for almost 17 years, and I've known his lady for a decade. I want to buy them a gun for a wedding gift, maybe a nice shotgun, engraved. But D is putting up some major resistance.

It's seems to me a very Midwestern type gift. My sister got one from my grandparents for her wedding (to a guy also originally from Michigan.)
That being said i am unlikely to be buying anyone any guns anytime soon.

Well of course, New Zealand didn't even get black power until the fifties!
This is a dude with a gun safe. Definitely no chance of offense.

My granddad has just gone for an emergency operation on an aneurysm. He and my grandmother are visiting us here in New Zealand from South Africa. He's been moved to the city hospital, right across from my workplace, and I'm heading there now. Earlier my mom mentioned they think he might have a kidney stone, so I guess it's a renal aneurysm rather than cerebral, but it is very, very bad. I'm on my way there now; wish me luck.

Thanks for the good thoughts, guys. He made it out of surgery, which is no mean feat, and will be in an induced coma for at least another day. But everything you expect to happen during emergency surgery on an 82 year old did: heart failure, renal failure, lung failure, loss of bloodflow to the abdomen and legs, and minor strokes. All of those got mended on the table, and now he's doing as well as could be hoped for. But that is still very bad.
He started complaining about backpain this morning, which quickly escalated. When my mom got him to the hospital, they found a large aneurysm, which luckily hadn't burst yet (that would almost certainly have killed him) but was going to very soon. Apparently it was already leaking when they got him on the operating table. Another few hours and it would have been too late.
My mom and grandmom are very heartened by him doing as well as he is, but I suspect they are mentally passing over the serious complications he suffered during surgery. There is every possibility he won't survive the night, though he is in very good care now and they are giving him every chance he can get.

What will happen will happen. We've gone home, there's nothing we can do and ny grandmother needs a lot of rest herself (she was already dozing off in the 10 minute car ride as they dropped me off at home), given the strain she's been under. Me, I'm going to d/l and listen to my later Swans mix.
