A long story of decline over the past few months - accelerated in the last three weeks - led to my parents finally convincing my grandmother to go to the hospital yesterday. Congestive heart failure, cardiac arrhythmia, kidney failure. There are a lot of reasons the things can't be fixed. When she gets discharged they're putting her in hospice care at my parents' house. As of my mom calling last night that was the plan, but I haven't heard anything else yet today. Someone told my parents last night not to expect more than a month or two. Blergh.

I'm sorry, mc... I know that it sucks no matter what, but if it makes you feel any better, it brought my mom great comfort to be able to do home hospice care. It made those visits from family and friends so much warmer.

I think it's better, too. She'll have way more visitors and a lot more help at their house. She's (probably) 89 and has had a few serious problems over the last 20 years, so it's not a totally sudden thing. Just a bummer. I don't want her to suffer. I was going to visit next Sunday (I live an hour away) but I think I'm gonna take off from work on Tuesday. I haven't seen her since Easter.

She has also hidden everything from our family, from her real age to where the hell her bank account is, which is not exactly helpful now that she's having memory problems.

Thanks, everyone. It was obviously not unexpected overall, just nobody thought it would be yesterday because she had responded so well to the overnight hospital stay. I'm glad that it won't be a long, drawn-out thing.

Sorry, Jim.

Thanks, I wasn't going to say anything about it at all but I thought it might be nice to offer solidarity for someone going through something similar

I thought portlandia was a fictional place on a shitty satiric tv show starring some ex indie rocker chick so you're saying

So I dunno is the problem with the article the surprised tone with which they say "so it turns out there's some cool stuff in Des Moines, we just thought it was the place where they were building landing strips for gay martians?"

There is probably cool stuff in Des Moines. My most recent experience there was doing the low voltage wiring and network configuration for a shitty overpriced hotel in a suburb so I did not get to see any of the cool stuff, but I would not be at all surprised if it exists.  The shittiest part was when I called my ex-stepfather's brother (ex step-uncle? I dunno) and asked him if there was a decent liquor store near the hotel site and he said "There's a Hy-Vee down the street"

I'm sure I'd like Des Moines! I don't even think the article's tone is that bad, to be honest.

I think there's probably a lot to appreciate about most cities, and I feel like making comparisons to Brooklyn and Portland is a kind of begging that shuts out awareness of any local charm, y'know? Develop a class of young people who care about the place because they care about the place.

I love the phrase 'Des Moines'! I don't think I've ever heard it said aloud. It sounds like the name of a 70s lower league football manager:

Des Moines!

Sorry...carry on.

Would it change your mind if I told you that both letters S are silent?
