I didn't mean that I had finished it and am reading again, I had stopped reading it at about 600 pgs and have just started up again and all the characters feel like people I have known for a long time. that's why same ol' same ol'. I'm at another party, people are saying idiotic things, otto just showed up.

I bought Raymond Carver's What We Talk About When We Talk About Love in Chicago. I've always appreciated Carver, but never been a systematic reader of his work, just the stories and poems one is assigned in undergrad lit classes or comes across in scattered form by chance of circumstance. I bought it because it was cheap, and because he's one of my partner's favorite authors and I knew she'd read it out loud to me.
This morning, it was after noon, and we were due to finally get out of bed, but I grabbed it from the suitcase at the foot of the bed and had her read me the first two stories. The first was about a man having a yardsale after his partner left him, and the second was about a sad man whose children have left home buying a photograph of his house from a handless man with a camera.
At the end of the reading, we were both silent. I leaned over and kissed her cheek, and it felt wet. A tear had run down it. It was about the loveliest thing I could imagine.

No writer has ever been more successful at putting drinks in my hand.

You can catch Will Ferrell portraying yardsale man in the upcoming adaptation of Everything Must Go...

Or in his own, ha ha. But seriously, that story about the birthday cake that's never picked up, prompting the cake maker to leave nasty messages on the mom's answering machine, is about the saddest thing ever. That last scene in the shop when she confronts him and breaks down is raw power.

Started reading
Sexuality and Socialism: History, Politics, and Theory of LGBT Liberation
yesterday, and it's pretty good so far. Things I found out: the word homosexual was only coined in 1869, and 'heterosexual' was coined around 1892. The book suggests that constructions of specific identities around orientation, rather than practices, are related to the Industrial Revolution and capitalism. It's crazy how recent most of the constructions we have around this stuff appear to be.
