While listening to my friend make boisterous vomit last night and then again this morning, I was trying to recall the last time I was sick with drink. It's been long enough that I can't recall precisely, but probably within the last ~four years. Usually the morning after is much worse for me.

Last time for me was July. I vomited all over the Denny's parking lot.  But before then it had been 3+ years--b4 I moved to dc

I was 18 the last time I got sick from drinking.  In fact it may have been the last time I vomited for any reason.  So, about 22 years ago.  Rookies.

I just spent three hours in the car with the Hangover Ham. I'm considerably less willing to affably reflect on my own history of alcohol-induced sickness, now.

I never vomit whilst imbibing, but I am known to regularly purge the next morning.

My gut just ain't what it used to be.

I think I puked from drinking once in the last five years or so - last year, during my research department's reflection weekend in the Ardennes. It was a fairly humbling experience, because 5 of my colleagues (3 other PhD students who knew me pretty well and about whose opinion of me I wasn't too concerned because they had long since formed one anyway; and 2 assistant profs that I would have preferred not to think of me in that way) were within earshot. I had had maybe 4 Trappist beers, on an evening on which I probably shouldn't have had any at all, as I'd had a headache in the afternoon, which I had chased away with some painkillers and then promptly forgot about. (I usually make a point of avoiding alcohol on a headachy days.)

I don't recall ever throwing up from a hangover, except last June on the bus trip from DC to NYC. I'd had a few beers the evening before, and it was a very bumpy ride, and I was very glad that there was an on-board toilet. I'm very certain that I wouldn't have gotten sick had it not been for the bus ride, but I also have a hunch that I wouldn't have gotten sick on the bus had it not been for the previous night's drinking, so I guess it qualifies.

Exactly...sometimes it's best to get that mess outta there rather than to pile food, coffee, etc. on top and wait to see what happens.

I went out last night and saw some bands, violated my rule against drinking draught beer at bars, and have subsequently spent the whole day feeling like all kinds of unholy hell.

I am having a Manhattan. Actually, my first Manhattan. It's nice. I wish there were rye in it instead of bourbon.

God I love a Manhattan.  Rittenhouse Bonded, Punt e Mes, a bit too much Angostura.  I will never be unhappy to have that in front of me; I am drinking one at present, as a matter of fact.

Rittenhouse Bonded is back in stock in Chicago, hallelujah!

I once complained here about how a manhattan with bourbon tasted just like doubled booze. Jim said not to expect much more balance with Rye. I suppose he was being delicate, but he was dead wrong. This was the first and last time jim was off on drinks, and I suppose his intent was to handle young guys in a soft way, in hopes that they wouldn't be turned off by the waiting world of hard flavor.

Anyhow.

Bourbon Manhattans are usually disappointing to me.  The mix often brings out too much of the sweetness of the bourbon, and usually isn't really complementary to the choice of vermouth.  It needs an extra-aged and overproof bourbon to really succeed, in my opinion - I had a great 50/50 Manhattan with a severely overproof bourbon at the Violet Hour (courtesy of Mike Ryan, AKA Bacon Mike, now running Sable downtown).

In the meantime: I got meyer lemons!  While I have to reconsider every drink before I mix it, it makes a whiskey sour terribly rich.

I've been doing em with Buffalo Trace, which is overproof and not cloyingly sweet at all, and it's still a touch too sweet for me. Really needs the rye to cut the vermouth.

I am not sure why I would have said there wouldn't be much difference between a rye Manhattan and a bourbon Manhattan unless the bourbon in question was a high-rye bourbon to begin with, but I apologize for steering you wrong and I'm glad you had a good cocktail

Nah, like seriously overproof, like 110+.  I think the one I had was like 125 proof.  Trace is 90, which is normal for good bourbon.

Whoa, damn. Alright, good to know! Don't think I've ever had a bourbon more'n 100 proof. I love the Trace, though.

Had an Overholt rye Manhattan at the bar tonight. It was better in all the ways that I expected it'd be. I wish the liquor store would listen to me and order something other than Beam and that ridiculous (ri)1 stuff.

Apparently, they're marketing it as "the perfect size to be shared between three people."
