Christ fireworks are cool and all but the ones in my neighborhood tonight are seriously scary out of control. One of my dogs is cowering under the bed while the other is defending us all by barking AT the explosions, so it's overall a really pleasant experience. No way in hell am I getting dog one to go out for a walk tonight.

Opinion question for dog owners: one of my dogs (well both of my dogs, but mostly one of my dogs) are still FREAKING THE FUCK OUT about having moved very recently. And to be fair, they've only been here since Sunday afternoon and I've only just managed to get things arranged into some semblance of normalcy.

Anyway, this little dog has quite a loud bark--as in, we live on the fourth floor and I keep my windows cracked and can hear it from the street--and the ladies who are always sitting outside when I get home from work give me updates (they're being very understanding and aren't complaining yet, but I've been asking), and apparently she's still making all kinds of noise throughout the day when I'm gone. Naturally, I'm worried about alienating my neighbors and/or getting kicked out of the building in short order if she doesn't settle down.

Would it be unduly cruel of me to shut both (small and quite inactive) dogs in the medium-sized bathroom with food and water and some chew toys while I'm at work for a few days until they feel more secure? That's where I put them when I was working from home yesterday and had to make conference calls and neither of them made a peep for up to an hour at a stretch. I don't want to traumatize them further, but my apartment is next to the elevator shaft, and while I can't hear it I think they can and that's what's setting off the little one (although neither of them is eating much so it may just be general anxiety).

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Man that is tough. Having dogs in this city must be really hard.

If they are quiet while in there, is it possible that until they get used to the apartment, it's actually less stressful for them to be in there than let loose?

Could be fine, especially if they're crate-trained. Lots of dogs feel more secure and calm in a cozy cave than out and about.

Yeah, I don't know from dogs, but when I moved Caliban into my current apartment, he spent the first three days cowering in the cubby-like space behind the toilet rather than coming out in the open.

Okay, thanks guys, I feel better about it now. Yeah, dumbfish, I crate-trained them when I adopted them and kept it that way for a year or so but I eventually gave it up. And epd, having dogs in this city CAN be tough, but it is also so, so worth it, for me anyway. Yesterday when I stayed home to work so we went for a walk in Prospect Park and played off-leash with the other dogs in lieu of a commute (which we could now theoretically do every morning if I got up a little earlier)? Perfect. It's just a little hard-going at this juncture.

boy do my cats love this short brown cardboard stick. They carry it around in their mouths like it is some kind of prize, and I think they try to hide it from each other.

Lola is in Toronto with me!

I have a litter box but she hasn't used it yet, it was a 5 hour trip and we've been here over night.

Lola don't you have to pee?!

That is cool, Ashley - hope Lola adjusts quickly to life in the big city!

I've struck up pretty close friendships with two neighbourhood cats in the last few months, but I still have no clue what their names are. I'm beginning to think I'll just have to give them names of my own - "the gingery one" and "the black and white one" is becoming a little boring.

There are pigeons that live in my window.  I'm afraid I won't be able to open the window because the screen is just stapled in, but I'm hoping the entertainment Lola provides by watching them is enough to make being too warm worth it.

Lola sees her first pigeon.

Lola exploring her new home.  Boring video!  She has big eyes.  Mom said last night Finnegan (our other cat) walked around the house meowing all night, she thought she was imagining it was Lola but my brother told her it was Finnegan.

dumbfish is that your dog?
