My rat runs around in my lap tugging on my pants and I think she's just being annoying or hungry or something.
But then I realize, she's just looking for pets!
Then we have a petting frenzy.

Stressful few days. Kenicke has "disintegrating mouth disease". But this has (hopefully) been sorted by medication. Lulu had a fight and got her ear torn up. Overnight stay at the cat hospital and surgery. She has to wear one of these funnel things for two weeks apparently. She is unhappy about it to say the least.

Scott! "Disintegrating Mouth Disease" sounds absolutely horrible! I hope both your girls are ok. The two best cats I have ever had both had broken ears, though, so Lola's injury will only increase her awesomeness once she's over her discomfort.

This isn't about pets, but its about animals so I figured I'd just put it here, though it could as easily go in the "what haunting thought keeps coming back to terrify you" thread, if we have one of those.
There aren't a lot of animals I'd get squeamish about. Not crazy about the idea of having large spiders crawling on me unexpectedly, but I don't mind looking at them, ditto snakes. I don't love earthworms but again, they don't make me want to run screaming either. So when I say I saw this thing yesterday which gave me the complete howling fantods, it was a very unusual thing to have happen.
I was sitting outside the front of the university, on the steps, having a coffee and cigarette with a friend of mine, and we were chatting away, when I interrupted her stream of conciousness about phenomenology with a "JESUS WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?" On top of the wall above us, like right over our heads had appeared this thing, this miserable abject thing. It was a bird, but it was so
fucked up
I can't tell you if it was a starling or a blackbird or a pigeon or what. It was bigger than a blackbird, but small if it was a pigeon. It's body feathers were black and greasy and fluffed out a bit like the way particularly unwell pigeons look. It had no feathers on its head, which was grey and bony, with shiny bright black eyes. ok, so, an ugly bird. But its beak, god, its beak, I couldn't look at it, it was just so disgusting. The bottom part of its beak was a normal thin pointed bit, straight out, but the top half of the beak went along normal, and then halfway along its length
stuck up at a 45 degree angle
. It's mouth was stuck open in what looked like a permanent agonised muppet face scream.
The bird seemed ok, hopping about happy enough, but jesus, how could it eat? How could I eat after looking at it? It was so messed up. Can birds break their beaks? It was like my quiet afternoon coffee had turned into a Lynchian nightmare sequence.

sounds like some kind of hornbill? I don't know what kind it would be though. most hornbills have the jutting up of the top of the beak but then it continues normally so they can close their mouth. This sounds somewhat different! Sounds like an amazing bird I'm sorry you were so disgusted!

Birds definitely can break their beaks. It's a sad thing for them, and as you saw, they tend to have a hard time with it. :-(

when I volunteered at a wildlife rehab center on the coast of swfl we had a bunch of pelicans and some of them had broken beaks. One that we named Mary was blind, missing a foot, and didn't have a top beak.
She was a sweetheart though.
