hello multi-linguists, can anyone tell me what this neon sign says?  the store is called New Texas Fried Chickens.  I won't put the [sic] there, because that would be pretentious.

Blue words say "allah" and "muhammad" (right and left, respectively), and the middle word is "masha'allah", which is roughly "god has willed it", but I really don't know enough about arabic grammar to make any specific sense of it. Dick Dick Dick, where you at Dick.

From right to left:

"GOD"

"GOD HAS WILLED IT" (that's what it literally means, it's a formulaic expression used as a generic response to good news, also has some connotation of a ritual saying to prevent bad luck, the way we say 'knock on wood' after saying something good has happened or something bad hasn't happened yet.)

"MUHAMMAD"

Sorry it's not more interesting.  These are just formulaic phrases.  You write them on your juice stand, the back of your truck, whatever.  Kind of the equivalent of American flag pins or ribbon bumper stickers.

I love other neon, too!  (though I'm only really documenting the signs in NYC for the moment, unless someone wants to give me a travel grant...)  those are great.  I would eat that fried chicken any day.

There's actually some great vintage neon in this little backwater burg that I've been meaning to snap a few shots of for you.

there was a pretty fabulous neon sign in downtown fredericton for a shoe store, that has since gone out of business.  No more sign.  I took a picture with my phone a few years ago, and thought about sending it to you.

is there a linguistics thread?  y'all have done so well so far, here is another neon linguistic challenge, from an Afghani restaurant...  is it Pashto?

It's calligraphy, which combined with the way it's rendered in neon makes it difficult to tell how you're supposed to read it.  It doesn't have any letters that are recognizably special to Pashto though, so it's possible it's Dari.

Do you know the name of the restaurant?

That's a decent picture of a dollar sign being smashed by a crocket stick.

Last April, I bought a DNA testing kit from 23andme.com 'cause they were having a sale on it.  I took a while to send the kit back, but I just got the results today!  It's neat!  I can see what kind of genes I have, and how they correlate to things like my likelihood of becoming a heroin addict!

that is awesome, Greg Nog.  I want to do that some time.

also, I had no idea until this murder thing here that Russia doesn't allow people to be extradited from Russian soil.  that little fact could come in handy some day...

It's called Bamiyan Restaurant
The sign says Bamiyan.  I was trying to think of a way to walk you through reading it so you wouldn't think I was just bullshitting you, then I forgot about this.  I'm still not 100% on what's going on in the middle, but the first and last parts of the word are enough to convince me.  Aesthetically, the striking calligraphic features of Bamiyan would be the two A's (long vertical lines), and the last letter N, ن, is up there at the top.
