What is your snowmageddon soundtrack? now playing RAGNAROK edition

I know it's all sunny and warm where some of you are, and that's fine, good for you, enjoy it.
Today I've been watching the weather radar with some interest, due to the current media freakout surrounding our impending winter storm. Here is how I described it via IM to a friend on the east coast earlier:
Quote
man looking at the animated radar, there is this green and orange monstrosity unfolding its wings like the demon in night on bald mountain from fantasia, and it's coming right at us
So I just spun up Immortal's At The Heart Of Winter, an obvious choice I know, but it's so right.
So what are you all listening to, in your wombs of ice?

We have pretty much entirely skipped the big snows you guys have been getting this year, but evidently that's over now, and we are doomed to get snowed in big tomorrow.

again with the walking aging hipster kid cliches, but Tori Amos, "Winter" and the Arcade Fire's first album have always been my WE ARE SNOW AND WE WILL BURY YOU soundtracks.
DERAIL! Jim. How snowpocalypsed are you right now? Ain't you got a blizzard? Everyone at work thinks we will be closed tomorrow and I think we're getting what you're getting.

It's pretty snowy here downtown at work but down south where I live it's supposed to be getting pretty bad. In fact they're telling me to get the hell out of here, so, uh, later.

I have a two-hour-plus commute that begins around 6am tomorrow, and I just have this feeling in my gut that I'll get all the fucking way there and THEN discover that everything's canceled.
in rather random preparation for that, I just added a shitload of Capstan Shafts, Moby Grape, Nellie McKay, and Ass Ponys to my MP3 player--none of which are remotely snowmageddon music, but all of which will be good comfort-tunes when I inevitably get trapped in a goddamn train depot for several hours.

There's nothing coming down right now. Just chill-to-the-bone wind and water and slush everywhere. So it's Polish Death Metal for my ride home for sure.

I've done my best to uphold the spirit of Ragnarok in this thread, but it's high summer over here, and, you know, the Libertines fucking rock, so I'm spinning their self-titled third album.

I know, I have no place posting in this thread, but I'll tell you: I'm listening to Neu! 75 right now (2nd pass) and "Hero" can be my snowmageddon soundtrack anytime. Long time since I've enjoyed an album so much, and so fast.

Since it's still hot as all the hells here, and the Libertines are still awesome, I'm spinning

Tim Hecker's new album, recorded with Ben Frost in a church in Norway - sounds exactly like those things would lead you to expect - first impressions are that it's a huge improvement on the oddly lacklustre
An Imaginary Country
, a massive, dense mix of organs, static, distortion and guitars, and a hot odds-on favourite for my Year End top 3.

New Buffalo Tom jams are available on their website--apparently they've got an LP coming out called Skins, and the first single from it, "Arise, Watch," is downloadable from Brooklyn Vegan. On their website, though, is one of those free-if-you-give-us-your-email deals, an acoustic EP called Bones (an appropriate title). It's two new songs, "Tree House" from Let Me Come Over, and a New Order cover ("Age Of Consent"). The new songs are really cool, and continues the trend since they regrouped in 2007 of Bill and Chris sharing vocals on the same songs, rather than Bill singing most of the songs and Chris doing a couple on every album. They make it work really well and I enjoy hearing them sing together. Haven't heard the New Order cover yet, not sure how I'm gonna feel about that, but I expect the new full-length to be as great as ever.

oh cool, glad you mentioned that, Andrew--would have had no idea otherwise. just downloaded, but will have to wait to listen because I'm in a coffeeshop (Grindcore House, some of you people would dig this place . . . although right now they're playing some flower-power hippie jam. lots of metal, normally . . . and all vegan, to boot!).

It's the electric version that's gonna be on the LP, so yeah, you want that one too.
Also, if it weren't for the lyrics, the New Order cover would be nigh-unrecognizable. They basically turn it into a Buffalo Tom song.

Just realized I said "Tree House" was from Let Me Come Over. My bad, it's on Big Red Letter Day. Still one of their best songs, regardless of original album.

Catherine Wheel:
Adam and Eve
Tremendous record in which former shoegaze concern transforms into one of expansive alt rock and stark frail things. Someone on another board compared the softer moments here to late-period Talk Talk and today I realized how completely right on that is.

I know a lot of people are like, "Why would I bother with Catherine Wheel without the shoegaze element," and I get that, but come on, the
melodies
on this record. Every song is enormous.

Tim Friese-Greene of Talk Talk produced Catherine Wheel's first album and some of their singles from that era, so you're not at all wrong in your citing of that influence. I think it's probably a stronger influence in their sound than shoegaze, really.
Catherine Wheel were so great--at least for most of their career. Wishville was kind of a letdown.
