Burial + Four Tet + Thom Yorke - Ego/Mirror

Anybody else heard this yet? I'm not a huge fan of Burial (or dubstep in general it seems), but Four Tet and Thom Yorke are maybe two of my top-5 favorite active artists. So far this thing isn't disappointing. Excellent stuff.

I love Burial, don't mind Four Tet and dislike Thom Yorke, but I think the negatives are too negative for me to get involved with that.

Four Tet - "Pinnacles"

This one off of another new split vinyl release of his, this time with Caribou. The track starts out all right then does the same thing for about 6 minutes, which gets really boring. But then for the last two minutes it destroys. He brings in a couple weird and awesome electronic melodies and it completely transforms the song. Wish he'd've brought that element in a lot earlier in the song. Four Tet is at his best when he uses melodies in his songs. He nearly always intertwines them with the electronic substratum of the song in an off-kilter way, slightly off-beat, and it's mesmerizing.

The Caribou song, "Ye Ye," is really good as well. I haven't cared for the last two Caribou records. Feel like he peaked with The Milk of Human Kindness, which is brilliant. I guess that's the only album he's ever made that I'm into, because I never liked those Manitoba records either.

I'm coming around on the new Explosions in the Sky. The first few times I listened to it, I wasn't feeling it at all. Now I'm really enjoying it, particularly the first track and the last two tracks. I had a similar experience with their last album, All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone, though somewhat less extreme, so I probably should've foreseen this.

They don't seem to have changed their sound up much at all, but as they've never made anything but great albums with their current formula, I have no problem with this. The only song that's something of a departure from their previous style is "Trembling Hands," the 3:30 free download "single." It's almost an instrumental pop-rock song, complete with chanting vocals and an extended, simple, triumphant climax. It's not horrible, but it's easily the weakest song in my opinion.

I don't know, with EITS it's like everything I listen to is pleasant enough but I keep expecting them to top or at least to approach the first half or so of First Breath After Coma and they just can't do it and so I'm always just a little disappointed.

I've said elsewhere that Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle is the first Bill Callahan I loved. But this morning I'm listening to Red Apple Falls from '97, and it's sounding really good.

Does this mean I have to re-listen to all of Smog? Someone say no.

No. I don't particularly like Smog or Callahan's stuff, though it always seemed like "just my sort of thing."

I think I don't know any of the stuff before Red Apple Falls, and love all the stuff there and after (except Woke on a Whaleheart, which I only like).

Might add "Say Valley Maker" to the list as well.  Also, "Dress Sexy at My Funeral," if you're into that sort of thing.

Natural Snow Buildings' behemoth Daughter of Darkness set. When it's done in 25 minutes I will have been at school typing away to drones for five hours, and will be ready to go home.

I still really love all the early lo-fi Smog shit, probably more than anything I've heard by him since.

I am reviewing the new one for our next print issue--that'll be interesting. I have no idea how to sum up my feelings about it in 50 words.

No. The early lo-fi Smog stuff is utterly unlike his later Smog work and his stuff under Bill Callahan. I mean, who knows, you may love it, but it's not something you should feel you need to listen to because you like his more recent stuff. Personally, I find the early stuff a real mixed bag. Some good stuff, a lot of weird, uninteresting, and unpleasant stuff.

Red Apple Falls is my favorite of his, with Knock Knock close behind. I seem to be one of the few people who love late Smog but hate the Bill Callahan stuff. His most recent stuff bores me to death.

how can this song POSSIBLY be labeled as 'boring'? it's one of the finest songs I've ever heard, and I've heard a lot.

Oh whoa, I'm a minute in and this is already really dope. I guess I should have listened to that album when it came out, huh?

Yup.

NP: Matthew Friedberger - Meet Me in Miramas.

I like that, even though this is his solo, one-instrument just-guitar-and-voice album, Friedberger has elected to use the guitar mostly as a percussion instrument.

Has he put out more than one of these solo albums now? The whole thing has kind of passed me by, unfortunately.

Revising my earlier recommendation: Start with Julius Caesar. Don't stop.

I just got the second one this week. The first one is good but not outstanding. But I think it would be up your alley. It's the piano one. The second one I think is probably more interesting, but I've listened to it twice so I don't have a strong opinion on it yet.

Wow! I take it a doctor might diagnose you with serious Machinefabriek addiction, but I don't know what the cure is.
