Continuation of
this thread
.
Just discovered
these awesome three videos of Novos Baianos playing live in 1973
(just the first three videos of the playlist). Awesome awesome awesome. They look like they're having so much fun, and don't know how to effectively sing into microphones.
I also like that they're all almost completely unattractive. Back in the day when you were judged merely on the sound you made. Fantastic.
Edit: to put in the link.

Sorry, the final post of the last thread needs to be in this one.

Really? I kinda assumed everyone in NZ had heard the story. The legend was that Peter had to go to the hospital to get a jar of vegemite removed from his arse. It's an awesome urban legend because it involves both implied homosexuality and a locals-only sandwich spread.

Ellie is into this kids' programme called 'Horrible Histories' and I we've spent the whole evening laughing our heads off at these songs/videos.
They're all great, but my personal favourites are
Boudicca
('Go man! Yeoman! Defeat the Roman foe, man!'), and
Literally:The Viking Song
.
edit: not sure if those can be viewed outside the UK - that would be a bummer if not, sorry :-(

I can remove this if it violates forum rules, but the LPTJ founder does a hell of a job on this cover of "Power In A Union," not to mention the greatness of the message of solidarity. The times certainly call for things just like this.

I saw this kind of overwhelming festival-show on the Jersey Shore last night, which I'd like to write about later, time permitting, but in the meantime, if anyone is unfamiliar with Bruce Springsteen's late-60s band Steel Mill, you have GOT to listen to this song
"Cowboys of the Sea."
It's hilariously bad--and if you don't have patience for 5 stoned-out minutes of moronitude, just play the final two minutes, which have yet to fail in inspiring body-shaking laughter on my part.

Sarcasms aside, the [Radiohead] video isn't great... but not many are.
So true. I'm a huge fan of the Rural Alberta Advantage, but they make some of the worst videos around.
This new one
has got to be one of the corniest, worst videos I've ever seen.

Just stumbled on
this stunning clip
of Tim Buckley performing "Song of the Siren" a few years before
Starsailor
.
Note the lyrical variation:
I'm puzzled as the newborn child
I'm as riddled as the tide
becomes
I'm puzzled as the oyster
I'm troubled as the tide

Oh, yeah, that's talked about in Dream Brother, the dual biography of Tim and Jeff Buckley. He had that song for a while before Starsailor, obviously, and when the Monkees put him on their show singing it, one of his friends made some kind of comment about the "puzzled as the oyster" line that made Tim feel all apprehensive about it, and so he changed it. The friend says in the book that she was actually trying to tell him that she liked it, but he took it all wrong, and wouldn't let her explain. Tim was apparently quite moody, from the way he came across in the book. I highly recommend reading it, by the way, if you're a fan of either or both of the Buckleys.

Big fan of both, but mainly Buckley Sr. I've got
Dream Brother
and have read chapters here and there, but never straight through. Missed that anecdote, so thanks!
For what it's worth, I would have kept the oyster.

i like that RAA video (not the song though). i think the corniness is intentional, so it probably can't be considered corny.
it's true most radiohead videos are not so hot, which is something it took me a long time to wrap my head around since their quality control is pretty high in other areas. and the ones i liked at the time haven't aged well, like "paranoid android." i love the "lotus flower" one though. it's simple and has a nice kind of oddball humor to it.

tMO's been listening to a lot of Adele lately, so I've been listening to a lot of Adele lately. This has not been a problem for me. The video for
"Rolling in the Deep"
is pretty great.
But yeah, that woman's got some pipes.

I still really like the new album. It takes the promise of the debut and gives it class and maturity. Can't ask for more out of a sophomore album. L is really into it, too, so it's one we listen to quite a bit when we're together.

Agreed, davy. I know a lot of folks like "Chasing Pavements" from the debut, but the last half is too melodramatic for me. So far I haven't found any false notes like that in the new album.
Adele's lyrics are almost as impressive as her pipes. "Right as Rain," my favorite from the first, actually grooves you up NOT to have sex. How often does that happen in pop? Only comparable song I can think of is "Song Against Sex" by NMH, which isn't pop.
