Jim, you're gong to be the death of me with your food porn...

AUD is also worth more than USD right now, but things proces are still high here. We're in the "can't buy kunch for under $5" category too - well. maybe a cheese sandwich or something like that, or a bad chain burger...

Anyone have good tips for grilling kebabs? I'm doing peppers, onions, mushrooms and chicken.

That's half the battle then!  Just keep turning the kebabs frequently when you're grilling

Maybe I'll sautee some tofu with quinoa today. Or maybe I'll let my dad pay for Mexican delivery.

I hate to mention fast food in such an exalted thread, but I had what was maybe the best fast food meal of my life a little while ago. I was driving back to Athens from a meeting in north GA, and I went through the Captain D's drive-thru. Classic Fish Sandwich combo. $5.99. Hoagie-style, crisp buttery bun, crunchy fried fish, relish-mayo, lettuce. Thick-cut fries. Sprite.

Fuck, y'all, I didn't know fast food was supposed to be that satisfying. I'd eaten at Captain D's once since I started eating fish again, but it wasn't nearly this good. Also, I managed to eat it all while driving without making a mess, so I was pretty proud of that.

I've eaten at Captain D's in a pinch and it's OK. They have really good cole slaw and fries, actually. I do wonder where the fish and especially the shrimp comes from, but probably don't wanna know the answer.

I gotta get some new vegetables into my repertoire. My staples right now to have all together are onion/musroom/garlic/broccoli/carrot/red pepper. I've done sweet potatoes and like them. Eggplant seems like it would take longer to prepare and both of those seem like meal add ons rather than staples or a base. Any suggestions?

Eggplant is totally, definitely a base.  It doesn't really take a whole lot of time to prepare either.

Green/yellow squash...

Also a good summer dish is thinly sliced cucumber tossed with some sort of acid and oil. Then add thai chiles or ginger or whatever you have on hand

Sometimes I wish I didn't just totally hate eggplant. I'd have so many more options!

I used to hate it, purely. Then I hated it because everyone insisted on serving me eggplant in every meal, usually to the exclusion of all other options because it is the thing you do for vegetarians, and because I still didn't like it in my mouth.

Now I do not hate it. There is hope for you yet.

Do you hate it even in pureed form like baba ganoush or other Middle Eastern or Iranian dishes? A lot of people I know who hate eggplant, hate it for textural reasons, so those can be a good way of testing whether different texture makes it better. I know one person though who hates absolutely all forms of eggplant, and not for lack of trying it fairly often and wanting to like it, so if it's more of a strong taste aversion, getting past that might be more difficult.

Yeah, I just hate it in "whole" form for textural reasons. It's safe to say that baba ghanoush is significantly different In The Mouth from other forms of eggplant and that one could probably claim that it wasn't eggplant at all and people wouldn't be able to tell.

Do kids really die from another kid at camp bringing a nut bar which doesn't get unwrapped?

eta: on re-reading I am going to guess that maybe the kid was too young to know not to eat nuts, and they were worried this lady's kid would give the nut bar to the allergic kid -- on first reading I thought she was worried because the other kid was so sensitive he could be harmed by the nuts through their wrapper
