I am volunteer editing articles for a design magazine that is mainly in Farsi.  The articles are translated from many different languages by people whose first language is Farsi, so the translations are a bit ... stiff.  My job is to make them less awkward to read.  It's not really a big deal, but I'm pretty nervous about it!

Does anyone have any advice on what I should be aware of / careful of in doing this?

It's always hard getting prepositions right, even more so when translating between languages in different families (like Farsi and English), and small errors can radically change the meanings of the statements.

In general, it would be best if you can get the original translators to proof your work afterwards, with the original in hand.

I was thinking that!  But I'm not sure if I can do that, or how involved in that I can be.  There are four of us doing the translation editing, and everyone contributing (writers, designers, translators, etc) is a volunteer.  So there's limited time to work on it between all of us.  But I think he may ask us for input once we have this issue finished, I can mention it then.

I am probably just making excuses because I'm nervous about it!

turns out i am a natural at pulling pints! my first one was a bitter, and perfect. then later on i pulled two great pints of guinness, which i was worried about because i thought they would be hard. the irish girl who ordered them complimented me as she left while the boss was standing there which helped.

anyway they asked me back tomorrow and asked me what days i can work so i guess i have the job! although tomorrow is going to be a really busy night because there's some event on so maybe they will change their mind if i crumble under the pressure? fingers crossed i do well.

I miss pulling pints.  I remember the first one I did I hesitated and didn't show the necessary conviction--but after that I perfected my technique.  We had this one tap at the second bar I worked that had one of those long proboscis-style nobs extended down (maybe for nitro, now that I think of it) and that was the hardest pint to pull.  Elderly Englishmen on holiday don't let you get away with extra foam.  It's a fun job (in my experience), though, congrats!

Woo Chet!

I got my student evaluations last term, and by far the best I got was one with all the boxes ticked on the front indicating that I'd done great, and on the back a biro drawing of a girl with pigtails, a huge smile and giant teeth with an arrow pointing to it saying 'this is you'. wooo academia

Is pulling pints a British term? I've never heard of it, and a quick Google search doesn't reveal much. Regardless, congrats, Chet. I'm sure you'll nail that second trial too, dude.

What instructions were you given about the beer/foam ratio? I prefer almost no head (= more beer), but I'm told that's not considered ideal.

In any case, I'm pretty sure the standard around here, with only ca. 75% of the glass taken by beer, isn't ideal by anyone's measure. As much as I like the notion of beer on tap, almost better off asking for a bottle and a glass sometimes.

It varies a lot depending on the style of beer and type of glass. Some glasses are designed to allow some head so as to enhance the aroma and show off the lacing and such. But yeah, I'd generally rather have a couple more ounces of beer, and your standard pint glass should only have a thin layer of head and be pretty much full.

I saw a thing once on this ol' internet that you could print out and hold up next to a pint glass and it would tell you how much beer it is short of an actual pint based on the level. It was pretty surprising how much you lose when it's just a little bit low, what with the top of the glass being the widest part and all. I have once or twice asked a bartender to top me off after the head settled, if it seemed pretty ridiculously low, and I feel like I've read things that say that sort of thing is okay, but I can't help but feel a little bit dickish doing it even though, hey, like, I paid for a beer, not 3/4ths of a beer.

Yeah, friends have made that move before, but I'm a wuss about that kind of thing. Good to know that my irritation about not getting a full glass is usually valid.

OT: We have previously discussed the arbitrariness of grants and journals. Just got word that an article that's been turned down by three journals got accepted w/ minor revisions by the leading journal in my field. Guess I'll be having a celebratory (full) pint or two tonight.

re: beer head. they didn't instruct me on that but the general standard is about a fingers width, right, maybe a bit more for a stout? i think head is essential for a good beer, it's aesthetically pleasing and it releases aromas and improves taste.

tonight was busy and i think i did okay, albeit with one or two hairy moments. they sent me home early when it starting dying down though and they didn't say when they need me again, just maybe next thursday SO NOW I AM FREAKING OUT THEY HATE ME AND THINK I SUCK. i really need more hours anyway so might start looking for something else on top of this/instead of if i can find something steady.

oh and an older woman called me gorgeous.

Found it!
http://thebeergauge.com/

If the beer is a full inch from the rim, you're out 1/4 of the pint.

In theory, there is a mark on most of the imperial pint glasses that suggests where the beer stops and the foam begins.  In my experience bartending (in the UK) most punters want it full as close to the rim as possible to maximize their beer.  Not more than a finger or so.

However, you'll find the opposite of this in places like Germany and the Netherlands where they like more foam.

Congrats! That's so awesome! It's funny how sometimes the "fine, you don't want this? I'll just go somewhere BETTER!" move works.
