As of a couple weeks ago I am suddenly getting paid a Lot of Money to do simple shit like collect soil samples w/ a hand auger, purge & sample monitoring wells and draft site maps and it's thrown all of my schemes into disarray. I'm doing less complex stuff than my old job, for about 20% more money, and now I'm really confused about my immediate future because I'm still trying to get my ass permanently to Pittsburgh in a couple months, and this awesomely easy high-paying job is in North Carolina.

Is it worth putting off Pittsburgh for a year?  Or are you needing to get out of Dodge, like, now?  Either way, nice to be monetarily recognized!

It would be almost literally impossible for me to do my job without a smartphone.  Sometimes I have to fill out forms that ask for fax numbers for various offices and I just write "none." Then people call me and go, "No, really, we need the fax number," and I have to say, "No, really, there's no fax machine." I have introduced compromise language involving an efax account but apparently we will be dragging our generous funders kicking and screaming into the 21st Century.

We have a fax machine, but it never seems to work when anyone tries to send something, either that or nobody knows how to use it. We get faxes sometimes, but nobody usually notices them for a couple weeks.

I often refer to them as facsimiles/the facsimile machine, because I'm one of those people...

oh jesus we still have a fax machine, and even after we transition to electronic medical records next month I will still have to use it. Part of my job is to sort and distribute faxes. I am pretty sure that we got it off the back of a truck or something because it breaks/jams/malfunctions at lease once every two days, and once I think my boss got a papercut in an artery when putting paper in the fax machine on account of how much he was bleeding.

our copier/scanners are also fax machines so we just put in the paper, dial the number and it goes- like we were scanning something. pretty legit.

I touched paper once, when I was signing some documents indicating that I was a citizen and my taxes should be withheld and I wanted health insurance and so forth. I'm really trying to think of other times ... overall, paper cuts not a big on-the-job hazard.

We have a fax machine but it's kinda funny (to me), we've got an all VOIP phone system over a SIP trunk, entirely digital and IP based, so even to be able to use a fax machine (which requires analog lines) we need to have an adapter connected to the network that is essentially a reverse modem. So it's a kind of wacky high-tech low-tech mashup to get it working.

We have a fax machine at our clinic and use it b/c faxing is more secure than email (although I don't actually know much about the security of faxes), and we pretty much never email clinical stuff. Probably why you guys still use it too, nny—when I was in a hospital setting, we could email stuff, but only within our firewall.

Not only does my workplace have a fax machine, it's a thermal roll one. I'm pretty over it, but the wholesalers are still pretty into them I think. Some of them are starting to use email, but my boss is a luddite.

Not the label maker, but velcro dots and a laminator. Also living in the 80s. We're paid in cash and the accounting is all on paper. And only upgraded to a vaguely computerised system for the cash registers 4 years ago. In her defence, the boss started the business in the 80s. It's been a long 25 years.

But the fax machine is in another clinic often at least, which presumably has their own protections and we have a signed release to send the stuff to anyway, so our asses are covered, whereas the email stuff can be hacked. Nothing is 100% secure, but fax (and most other things) > email is the thought.

I hadn't even thought about the security thing, but that makes sense. You also don't have dopes who hit Reply All instead of Reply or accidentally forward an email to their entire address book rather than just the intended recipient with faxes.

Yeah, I get the security thing, but it's like not leaving voice mail (which doctors will never do) — it's more secure in theory, but makes life infinitely harder.  When I was getting a bunch of doctor faxes recently, I had to keep running over to the woman who sits by the fax machine to tell her I was expecting a fax, and always at least one person would see it before I got it.  Also, hey, most people don't have faxes!

My psychiatrist will leave me a detailed voicemail if I leave a message with a specific question (re: dosing, or side effect, etc.). I imagine I probably gave him explicit permission to do that at some point though. Have a vague recollection actually. Makes life easier since one can't always drop everything to have a private conversation if it isn't needed (i.e., I really just need a thumbs up or down, or to know that the matter is being looked into, or that my test results came back and my levels seem fine, or whatevs).

On edit, I guess when I think about it it would seem that he's careful that someone not me couldn't glean much meaning from the voicemails in question, but whatever, works for me.

And I have had a GP straight-up e-mail me lab results, too. HIPAA violations follow me wherever I go, it would appear.

On edit, I guess when I think about it, I signed a form asking them to please do that.
