dropped one ball at work because I was reeeeallly late. I have extra hours so it wouldn't have been a big deal if boss hadn't emailed me at 9:30 the night before saying he needed me to do something. He said that there was a jamaican saying "sorry can't buy soldier lorry" I don't know what that means besides "girl, you screwed up." I would like to hide under my desk.

Hey, so, y'all remember when I got that job a few months ago, and I could finally pay my bills, but it was still just part-time, so I had to keep some hours at my previous job, and work every other weekend, and sometimes two weekends in a row, which meant working 19 days without a day off, and also I didn't have health insurance, but that was no big thing because I've
never
had it?
Well, I got a promotion yesterday. I'm now a full-time member of the Piedmont College faculty --an Information Services Librarian -- and they're going to give me more money, a sane schedule, my own office, weekends off, 3 weeks of vacation a year, and benefits!
I don't really know what to think!

Yeah, yeah! It's jut really unexpected, and I'm kind of in awe and maybe a little apprehensive about all my new responsibilities. Plus, I always get a little nervous about change, and there's a lot of them coming my way now. Not to say they aren't good changes...
Here's how it came about: I've been working on the Athens campus of Piedmont College, sort of an outpost for the main 120 year-old campus in Demorest, a small town in the foothills about an hour north of here. The library here in Athens is small, tucked away, and very quiet. It's been pretty slow this summer, so slow that even with a professional staff of just two, there's been a lot of downtime. The main library, which gets most of the traffic and contains most of the resources, is up in Demorest.
Anyway, about two months ago, two women who'd been working there for years got into a shoving match over who had control of the student workers--like, a literally physical altercation between two grown women. They were both terminated on the spot, and the library was suddenly and unexpectedly shorthanded. I told my boss I was interested in taking one of the full-time positions, but I live in Athens, and that's an hour-long commute. The administration was wary of hiring commuters, so while I still submitted an application and wrote a few emails to various people pleading my case, I didn't have high hopes that I'd be seriously considered.
But this past Monday, I got a call about an interview on Wednesday, and immediately after I interviewed with the Demorest staff and the college provost, I was offered the position. Outside of the odd late shift or Saturday shift, I'll be working a typical 9-5-ish schedule. It's been so long since I've had that much time to myself. It's awesome, but hard to process.
Complicating matters right now is the fact that I have to turn in my letter of resignation to the public library tomorrow, and I am *not* looking forward to that.

Yeah, I can relate to this. My recent promotion+raise had a very similar effect on me, especially since it seemed like an outsized positive, just to keep doing what I've already been doing (minus, in fact, a few of the more tedious parts of my job). Also because I'm not used to having a boss who gives a shit about what I want or think should be done in the department. I almost feel like I should be anticipating a "catch" or other downside that I hadn't foreseen.

Davy, that's so awesome, dude. I literally just said something to my brother yesterday about how I'd like to get a job at a library. You're living my dream, Davy!

I'm working about 46 hours a week right now, but they're mostly evening shifts, so I don't get home until after 8. And since I'm taking care of Finn in the mornings, it often feels like I'm working all day long. The worst part is that because I've been working every other weekend at the public library (in addition to the 30 hr/wk Piedmont position I already had), I've been working 12-day stretches with 2 days off in between. I've been doing that for 4 months now. Blech.
We won't even talk about the stretches where I've worked 2 weekends back to back. Those stretches -- 19 days working, 2 days off, 12 more days working -- are absolutely soul-destroying.
So yeah, all that sucked. This will be better.

I'm sorry, but if it does not contribute to GDP, it cannot possibly be useful work.

Looking after kids is easy! Chicks do it, so it must be.
But for reals Davy congrats, that has awesomeness in it.

I think I am going to quit my job. I get almost no support and too much responsibility. When I ask for more training, my boss tells me to figure it out. I've lost almost 10lbs because I am too stressed to eat much.
blah. I think this will be a good place to work in 6 months if they can figure out their shit, but in the meantime I don't think I have the fortitude or the right skill set to make it happen.
Tell me your job quitting stories, if you have any!

There was a guy on here who posted a long ass time ago (2004?) about a friend who quit his job at taco bell by getting his friends to come through the drive through while he was working, then climbing through the drive through window into the car and flipping the bird to everyone inside.

Does your job have a drive-thru window, bethany?
I'm sorry to hear it's so stressful, though. I hope things work out for you. I've never had a 'real' job, and I've never quit a fake one without moving out of town, so I have no advice.

Tough one today. On days like this, I worry about how I'm going to keep teaching giggly, unmotivated, and somewhat disrespectful teenagers over the next 20-odd years, as I get older and they get gigglier, less motivated and probably more disrespectful.
It's not the only part of my job, thank Allah, but it's a significant part. Almost in tears on the way home. Just thinking about some of it - such a treadmill, such diminishing returns, I wanted to talk to my Dad about it but well, he's not around any more.
