There was this lady trying to get me fired on Friday (for not doing someone else's job, no less) and she sent an angry letter to my supervisor in which she continually referred to me as "Mr. Briggins."

The best part is, she recounts 2 phone calls where someone named "Brian" was a huge dick to her, going so far as to mock her and refuse to transfer her to "Mr. Briggins."

And I have accepted an offer at a new place. My last day here will be the 24th. A marginally higher salary, company-covered insurance, much greater job stability—still, I've been here for 5 years. My longest job by far. More unknowns ahead than I have had in a long time. Not to mention the sort of long-term life-interrogating questions that always tend to be raised by these transitions. One can't help but feel ambivalent.

I'm in fundraising and have been doing tons of prospect research, what with grantmaking somewhat reflecting the current state of the economy, and found a corporate foundation that was a really good match for one of our programs. I told the director of the program about it and explained what our angle was, and as she feels more ownership over this program than some of the other directors, she kind of took the whole thing over, making the contact and then yesterday going to meet with them. I was feeling a little cut out of the loop--guess my ego took a little blow when I wasn't able to do the fancy parts of my job--but this morning she texted me to tell me they're going to fund us and thank me exuberantly for doing the "needle in the haystack" part of the job. It felt pretty good to be appreciated for that.

On another note, I got a sales pitch webinar from someone hocking a foundation and corporation search database that actually appears to be much better and more useful than what we're currently using. I've sat through a couple of these webinars just to see what's out there and this is the first time I've been really impressed. Problem: it would cost what would in the big picture be marginally more than what we have now, and the executive director is on serious lockdown when it comes to any extra expenses whatsoever (for reasons that should be in the ungoogleable thread). But, like, I really believe it would make my research more efficient and that it would definitely pay for itself. I just have to convince her of that, and she's a pretty impossible sell. So I guess I'm gonna spend part of Tuesday putting together a persuasive presentation for her, even though I think I might get shot down. These people, they do not like change, and sometimes that works to their advantage, but sometimes not.

Dammit, now my persuasive presentation regarding a raise will have to wait for awhile.

Man oh man. I got an email late Sunday night from my boss-to-be saying, 'Can't wait to see you on Tuesday! We're all excited!' and I freaked out, immediately replying, 'Uh, hey, I thought we had discussed my starting on the 5th. Please let me know if I was mistaken, etc etc'. No response Sunday night, no response Monday (they were out of the office for Pres. Day). I left a message on his cell Monday around 4, no response. I just called his office again this morning and finally got in touch with him, and he confirmed that that was HR's mistake and we were on track for starting in two weeks as planned. Man oh man. I've spent the last 36 hours on shpilkes. I can't think of anything worse than starting your new job by informing your employer that you'll actually be starting 2 weeks later than planned.

You know, on reflection, I think this was freaking me out so much because it taps directly into one of the philosophical issues that most directly and basically affects me on a psychological and emotional level: this recurring conflict between conventions and established, notional or theoretical structures, and the capacity of people to operate on a pragmatic, real-world level. That is, I know we had discussed over email the fact of my starting on the fifth, but that reality began to pale and dwindle in light of the fact that my official start date was set as today.

That is, if a start date of 2/21 is implicit or explicit and unnoticed in my original job offer, then what degree of substantiality, as a speech act, does my accepting the job have in establishing all the terms of the offer, even if part of the dialogue of my acceptance specifically overrides that particular proviso? And what are the real-world obligations and entailments stemming from this agreement? One begins to understand the famous distrust of words supposedly held by rustic peoples everywhere.

Also, it's winter, so pretty much anything can set off a full-blown existential crisis for me.
