There's a piece on this John Fahey box set in this month's WIRE magazine, but I haven't had time to read it yet.

I've been listening with some frequency to the new Leviathan True Traitor, True Whore - sidebar, does that make me a bad person? I don't know details but I know something sketchy is going on - and the new Wolves in the Throne Room Celestial Lineage .

Our own Black Amnesia of Heaven wrote a piece for Tiger Beatdown about why continuing to listen to Leviathan is extremely problematic in light of Jef Whitehead's rape charges. It is here:

“He’s a Fucking Maniac:” Rape, Black Metal, and the Fetishization of Illness

Look, I don't want to spiral this particular thread into an art v. artist discussion. That post is significantly more grim than I had previously acknowledged. I'm not going to throw my Leviathan records in a fire, but obviously I feel pretty conflicted. True Traitor is a really significant work, and there is a really disturbing link between the album and Whitehead's clearly abhorrent behavior. What do? Should I start a new thread for this? Is there anything useful to come from this line of thinking?

EDIT: Credit: BMOH - tremendous article, really measured, excellent work.

Let's start a new thread for it. I've got something to say on the subject, once I'm a little less busy.

New Future of the Left EP and album soon!

Surely The Plot Against Common Sense has to be the best album title of 2012, right?

did people know the Capstan Shafts put out a new EP in July? because I had not.

it's not their finest moment, by a long shot. but as a sucker for 14 song/22 minute albums, I'll rep for it anyway, with the qualification that you need at least several other Capstan albums first before it's worth your bothering.

also apparently I missed them on tour too and hope more people were there than the utterly depressing time I saw them alongside precisely three other people, two of whom were clearly dragged-along female dates.

Robyn Hitchcock has a 'best of' sort of thing coming out. It's pretty impossible for any two people to agree on such a thing, given that he's made 30 albums, but having said that, I'd say it's a 9/10 selection for an 'introduction to' type disc:

1. I Wanna Destroy You
2. Kingdom Of Love
3. Only The Stones Remain
4. The Man Who Invented Himself
5. I Often Dream Of Trains
6. My Wife and My Dead Wife
7. If You Were a Priest
8. Balloon Man
9. Madonna Of The Wasps
10. So You Think  You’re In Love
11. Queen Elvis (Obliteration Pie Version)
12. I Feel Beautiful
13. Mr. Kennedy
14. Full Moon In My Soul
15. Adventure Rocket Ship
16. Goodnight Oslo

I think Mr.Kennedy and So You Think You're In Love could make way for the Yip Song and Heaven, buat as I say, pretty impeccable otherwise. It's out on Yep Roc next week

And a new Jacaszek album in December.

The Tiny Mix Tapes story on it expresses perfectly my feelings about this. Few artists have plummetted so far from one release to another as he did from Treny to Pentral.

I haven't really kept up with Tom Waits since Bone Machine and Mule Variations (which are both up there with Closing Time and Heart of Saturday Night in terms of spin time).

How's he been doing?

I thought Orphans was a pretty strong collection, but I wasn't big on Real Gone. The Alice/Blood Money albums were both excellent.

edison in entirely-disagreeing-with-davy-on-what-he-just-said-about-favorite-albums-shocker  Razz

I crossed the border yesterday to get the new Tom Waits (and buy socks and gloves while I was at it). It's quite enjoyable so far, and there is even one really brilliant song that is an obvious stand-out, but most of it is entirely predictable, kind of a summation of the man's career and its different styles. So tighter and overall maybe stronger than Real Gone (a lot shorter, for that matter), but a bit less daring, less out there.

I mean, none of the recent stuff approaches his 80s output for me, I think we can at least agree on that, yes?

I appreciated Real Gone for its daring and abrasiveness, but I didn't find it much fun to listen to.

I didn't like the article at all... It was like reading a shitty book report on someone else's interview followed by vague, verbose commentary that craziness is some kind of commodity prized by metal fans. You can write pretty well, but you need to make a good point first and work through it.

I could see thinking in action, you're working towards something. I should cop that I hold you to a pretty high standard, so maybe I'm not being fair. But I know what you're capable of. Keep putting it out.

Most certainly!

(edit: though I might make an exception for "Hoist That Rag" off Real Gone and "Hell Broke Luce" from Bad As Me, maybe)

I Feel Beautiful is from 'Jewels For Sophia', and Full Moon In My Soul is from 'Spooked'.

I know what you mean. There's a hell of a lot of great Robyn tracks floating around in my consciousness. Not easy to keep track. Especially when so many of them concern crustaceans.

Thanks for pointing this out, btw - since I know next to nothing about Robyn Hitchcock aside from the fact that people with good taste in music like him, this should be right up my alley.
