Hauschka & Hildur Gudnadottir (high hopes for this one)
Interesting! When and where is that coming out?
I only heard it mentioned in one or two places - I think someone from a blog or a label tweeted on how great their advance copy sounded - but you've prompted me to look into it a bit more.
It's called
Pan Tone
, it's out on
Sonic Pieces
in a couple of weeks' time (Sep 23rd).
I really want this to be good. I need some good strings after the disappointment of Richard Skelton's AR album earlier this year (
Wolf Notes
, was it? Not all bad, I suppose, but I did not dig those vocals at all).
I liked Hauschka's 2006
The Prepared Piano
album quite a lot, but wasn't so keen on his more elaborate, instrumentally varied releases. Hildur Guđnadóttir, on the other hand, has yet to put a foot wrong as far as I'm concerned (she's on the brilliant A Winged Victory For The Sullen album I've been going on about). The track available for
]soundclouding
(I say that's a verb) is lovely, but a bit unexpected. The cello seems almost in the background, and if that's all prepared piano, then it must have been prepared with half a drum kit hanging off it or something - the cymbals anyway. I was probably imagining something more miinimal, but after a few listens I'm very taken with it - it's nicely twisty and jolly pretty, almost Christmassy in fact.
EDIT: The good old Milk Factory has
a nice review
up, by the way.

Thanks! Just had a nice soundclouding experience with that preview song. I'm not extremely crazy about what little I've heard of Hauschka (which doesn't include the album you mention), but this should be a nice way to wait for Hildur's next solo album.

I'll check out Hitler's next solo album, but I gotta say, I really liked his early stuff a lot better. The last three or four just haven't grabbed me.

The new release line-up for next week is kind of ridiculous:
Mason Jennings - Minnesota
Wild Flag - s/t
Blitzen Trapper - American Goldwing
St. Vincent - Strange Mercy
Primus! - Green Naugahyde
It's not every week I can put myself down for $75+ in new music.
Well, you can put off the Blitzen Trapper for a few weeks. The whole album's streaming free, here:
http://www.blitzentrapper.net/home
Not sure how long this will last. I've listened to 4 or 5 tracks so far and am loving 'em... more groove than
Destroyer of the Void
.

Oh, I pre-ordered the Blitzen Trapper a month ago! White vinyl, limited edition keychain, bumper stickers, and a t-shirt!
There was a delay with the t-shirts, though, and I haven't gotten it yet
. I have, however, listened to the thing, and I love it to death. We've been talking about it in one of the other threads...

I am stoked as well! I pre-ordered it way back in July, and got shipping notification + MP3 from Constellation last night, but I think I'll wait until next week and the CD's arrival to listen. It's supposed to be very much in the same vein as the last one, which is definitely fine by me.

Ah, okay, perhaps I haven't then! Must have been talking to myself again.
I don't really go for Dustin O'Halloran's brand of modern classical, but as I'm sure you're aware I would crawl over broken glass for Stars Of The Lid, and this sounds like a very close cousin to the Texan maestros indeed.

And I just saw that against all odds, Bozulich is playing a show near where my family lives when I'm going to be back there visiting next week! Give that I still rate the Evangelista concert I saw like 4 years ago as one of the best I ever went to I have to say Hot Damn

I like a Winged Victory for the Sullen, but it's no SotL. I'm hoping it's a grower.

I've only listened to it once so far, but that one listen has been very, very enjoyable.

Simon Scott - Bunny
Another track has popped up on
Tiny Mix Tapes
. Kind of a 'spaghetti doom' sound - like it.

It pains me to share this, but I think Bill Frisell just jumped the shark:

Oddly enough, I was just looking into Bill Frisell a few days ago. Where's a good place to start with him?

I started with
Go West: Music for the Films of Buster Keaton
(1995) which he did with Kermit Driscoll. I picked him up again with
Nashville
(1997) and liked it so much I bought his next two collaborations with Viktor Krauss,
Gone, Just Like a Train
(1998) and
Good Dog, Happy Man
(1999).
Ghost Town
(2000) was a solo album, and a disappointment. I've seen him play 3 times since then, and it was 1 phenomenal show with a Nashville feel, and 2 misconceived collaborations.
That's what's so godawful about this Lennon album. Frisell is a brilliant collaborator, but he's losing the ability to pick the right projects. Frisell and Lennon is like ice cream & kimchee. I find the sample tracks unlistenable.

Good Dog, Happy Man
is the one I have my eye on. I think I've also seen
Where In The World?
at the local record store. Have you heard that one?

Don't know
Where in the World?
- but I see it's another one with Kermit Driscoll. I love that Buster Keaton album madly. If you pick up this one and like it, let me know - I'm still in the market for 90's Frisell.

That list also draws my attention to
Dropped Pianos
, an album of 'sketches' for Tim Hecker's
Ravedeath, 1972
, which I'm very happy to learn about.
Re Jacaszek, I'm listening to
Pentral
again after a long break, and while some sections of it are a lot prettier than I remembered, those jarring blasts of noise are as unpleasant as ever. I really don't think I
get
that album, and after the brilliance of
Treny
it must be rank as one of my biggest personal disappointments of recent years (musically speaking, of course!)

Tyler Ramsey's got a new one out called
The Valley Wind
and it sounds pretty darn good first time through. I can't remember if anyone here was into his last album,
A Long Dream About Swimming Across the Sea
, but I absolutely love it. Some of the best melancholy folk stuff to come out in the past several years.

theres a complete remastered box set of smiths stuff coming out pretty soon, thats pretty cool. the regular version of it is only $51 on amazon, which seems like a thoroughly reasonable price for that kind of thing. also theres a batshit nuts collectors edition that comes with the cds, all the remasters on vinyl, 25 7" singles, and a bunch of other stuff. that one is... less reasonably priced.
