New Thread seems to be in order.

So I started today by getting me one of these as my turntable has been out of action for several months now:

I then went record shopping for the first time in a long while. It felt good.

Big records:
Dirt Bombs - Party Store
Purling Hiss/Puffy Areolas split
Iron Curtain - Shadow

Little ones:
Gorilla Angreb/Lokum split
Gary War - EU Tour ep
The Functional Blackouts - Raw Dawg, Raw Deal
Lord High Fixers - Take Me Home
The Gories - Bug House, Waterbug And Roach Traps
The Hunches - Got Some Hate
The World Is Lousy With Ideas 6
Bits Of Shit - Dirty Bomb
The Rip Offs - Go Away
Dead Wife - D.W.S.Y.H.F

Well hey, I guess I should put this post in this thread, then.

You guys, I have been buying so many records lately. All of them at shows, or through mailorder (which is weird, because I never used to mailorder shit). Here's some stuff I've gotten lately:

Make Do And Mend - End Measured Mile
My Disco - Little Joy
Young Widows - Live Radio LP
Young Widows/My Disco split 7 inch
Young Widows - Future Heart 7 inch
Gods And Queens - self-titled LP
Coliseum/Burning Love - split live LP
Superchunk/Coliseum - split 7 inch (Who knew such a thing existed? Not I! Better yet--it's both bands doing Misfits covers!)
Black God - self-titled 7 inch EP (this is the latest incarnation of Black Cross/Black Widows)
Mouthbreather/Environmental Youth Crunch - split 7 inch
Netherfriends - Angry East Coast 7 inch EP
The Diamond Center - Caraway b/w 20 Twin 7 inch
White Laces - self-titled 12 inch EP
Joan Of Arc - Life Like LP (my copy is a cassette--score!)

There are more, I'm sure.

I really liked that Purling Hiss "Public Service Announcement" LP.  Gonna have to check out the split.

Damn.  Andrew just single-handedly drove up the GDP of Louisville, KY by .01% with that list.

Man, I have heard about that Coliseum / Superchunk split like 3 times and I thinks to myself, 'that is fucking nuts' and promptly forget about it each time, only to be shocked and intrigued all over again.

Those Purling Hiss records are really good. Hissteria was one of my favourite records of last year. The Birds Of Maya records are greawt but he seems to be at his best when alone.

More records purchased today:
The Mummies - Never Been Caught (used)
Tim Hecker - Ravedeath, 1972
Focus - Focus 3
Technical Space Composer's Crew - Canaxis 5
High Tide - High Tide
Morley Grey - The Only Truth

One of the best things about music in the current era has to be the constant stream of great vinyl reissues coming out. It seems almost bizarre that I can go out and get a brand new copy of an odd curiosity like the Technical Space Composer's Crew LP or some once super obscure and impossible to find cult release like The Only Truth.

I ordered the new Liturgy LP from Thrill Jockey, so I'm pretty stoked on that, and I also downloaded the new Gridlink. I was going to buy the new Jesu but it's not on vinyl yet.

Haha both Coliseum and Young Widows have come through here on tour in the past week and a half. Separately, at that. Young Widows were touring with My Disco, and Coliseum were with Gods And Queens.

I mainly bought the Superchunk/Coliseum split because, once I realized it existed, how could I not buy it? It's pretty good, though, especially the Superchunk version of "Horror Business." I don't think it's even Mac singing on it, but it totally rules.

I don't have the new Gridlink--which I need to remedy ASAP, in fact--but the other two are fucking great. I had the same experience with the new Jesu as you did: "Oh, that's out? I should buy the vinyl. Oh, damn, vinyl's not out yet. I'll wait."

I didn't go to Young Widows/My Disco last night, and I'm fucking kicking myself. Fuck.

Get the new Gridlink! It's fucking great.

That is truly a shame. My Disco would have gloriously destroyed your hearing.

The new album is fucking awesome, and does a great job of capturing their live sound (though I can't get my stereo loud enough to replicate their volume level). I recommend it highly.

I saw Birds of Maya open for Black Mountain once, and wasn't particularly impressed--they seemed kind of "slick" in a way that rubbed me wrong.  Purling Hiss are decidedly non-slick dudes, despite sharing members (well, one guy at least) with Birds of Maya.

I would like to buy records, but since I'm moving I have started downloading everything I already own on vinyl instead.

It was a late show on a Sunday night and I worked 7:30 Monday morning. Just wasn't happening. I'm sure both of them will be back though. Both have hit Milwaukee more than once in the last year or two.

I finally got the new Jesu and Tyler, the Creator albums from amazon yesterday. I haven't had enough time to know what I think about either though.

I also got another package, a big package. Robotic Empire (one of the best labels and online mailorders in all of the internet in case ya don't know) had a sale in which every CD was on sale for $2, I went a little nuts...

Order went a little something like this

Amanda Woodward - Discographie
Aidan Baker - Dry
Aidan Baker - Figures
Aidan Baker - Songs Of Flowers & Skin (they were out of stock so they sent me something called Vanessa Van Basten? I have no idea, but I trust it must be good if Robot Empire sent it to me)
Fucked Up - Epics In Minutes
Indian Summer - Hidden Arithmetic/Live: Blue Universe
Japanther - Master Of Pigeons
Japanther - Yer Living Grave
Magrudergrind / Shitstorm - Split
Majority Rule - Interviews With David Frost
Mindflayer - Expedition To The Hairier Peaks
Nadja - Desire In Uneasiness
Pageninetynine / Majority Rule - Split
Raein - Ogni Nuovo Inizio
Red Sparowes - The Fear Is Excruciating, But Therein Lies The Answer
Thou - Tyrant
Torche - Self-Titled
Yaphet Kotto - The Killer Was In The Government Blankets

OK, maybe I went a lot nuts. Got a lot of listening ahead of me  Smile

Davy, are the reissues worth getting if you've got all the originals? what are the extras, etc?

They aren't terribly extensive. An average of about 2 per album, but most of them are worth having. Valley of Rain, Storm, & Swerve contain only alternate versions of album cuts. The rest (at least up through Purge & Slouch, which is as far as they've gotten) contain rarities or what-not.

The true selling point, according to both me and Howe Gelb, is the remastering and the presentation. Each disc is housed in a mini-LP sleeve (made of nice heavy cardstock) with new--and let's face it, drastically improved--artwork, featuring new liner notes by Mr. Gelb himself. I've really enjoyed reading his take on each album. And the sound is absolutely stunning. Even their worst, most throw-away tracks sound brilliant. Rich and full and bright. I can't get over it. I don't think a band has ever sounded so aurally pure to me.

I've picked up 10 of them so far (everything up to 1993, plus Blurry Blue Mountain, the most recent release), and fully intend on buying the rest when they're made available. Ramp (Heart), Center of the Universe, and Purge & Slouch just came out. Next up: Glum, Goods & Services, and Black Out, which I think is a bootleg or something. They're due to be released in late June.

Elodie (Andrew Chalk & Timo Van Luijk) - Echos Pastoraux LP (La Scie Dorée)

Newest Chalk arrived today and is dominated by naturally recorded instruments, with background field recordings and drones, and brings to mind nothing more than the first two In Be Tween Noise CDs (Humming Endlessly... and So Delicate...) on first listens.

Haha, yeah, it has that look about it. I didn't listen to any of those in high school, but just about everyone else listened to at least one (minus The Roots), and if you substitute Nirvana for Tool, that's a good percentage of the music coming out of the drama department head's office.

Not that Roots album, of course, but I have listened to 'Things Fall Apart' not a few times in my younger days.

The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society.

Finally ran into this on vinyl. Never heard it before, so I'm excited.
