You're a lot kinder to
Chinese Democracy
than I am. I guess the rub is that what I really,
really
want from a band is focus (drive and vision are nice as well), and while pinning down what exactly focus sounds like is really hard (except saying 'like the Fall when they're in the groove'), it is very easy to point to examples of music that simply does not have its shit together.
Chinese Democracy
is an example.
Though we're on the same page re:
Lulu
Chinese Democracy's focus is sounding like the decade+ of hard rock that went by while it was being recorded

I took my furlough day today (day where you don't have to work but you don't get paid- 1 per pay period) and jaunted over to the nearby old man record store with big dollar section:
kate bush- lionheart
billy joel- the nylon curtain
bill cosby- to russell, my brother, whom I slept with
go go's- beauty and the beat
the suburbs- dream hog
durutti column- say what you mean mean what you say
not sure about the latter two albums yet but meh, they were a dollar.

I just bought way too many Young Governor singles and EPs. It was particularly frustrating because I couldn't get two from the same website, so I wound up spending probably more on shipping than on actual records. But, whatever. I'm particularly excited about this:

I took Friday off work so I could do some things around the house and then a bunch of things around town I can only do in standard business hours. I went record shopping instead.
Harmonia & Eno '76 - Tracks & Traces
Rolling Stones - Big Hits (High Tide & Green Grass)
Rolling Stones - Between The Buttons
GG Allin - I Hate You + You Hate Me
GG Allin - Always Is, Was, And Always Will Be
The Shadows Of The Knight - Back Door Men
Tindersticks - S/T
The Mentors - Live @ Whisky a Go Go
Virgo - S/T
DMZ - S/T
John Fahey - Blind Joe Death
Oren Ambarchi & Joe Talia - Hit & Run
With the exception of the Mentors record these are all lovely new reissues. A couple of which will replace old beaten up things that sound like shit. I'm very pleased to see Tindersticks reissues. Tiny Tears is still a unspeakably wonderful song. I listened to it 5 times in a row when I got home.

I'm almost scared to ask how much those Tindersticks reissues are going for down here. Probably $30-40 (AUD), am i rite? I still can't quite bring myself to buy records at these prices.

I don't remember exact price, but it may have been $40. Could be worse - I could be paying NZ $$. I imagine they're around $60 at Real Groovy in Auckland. I've found record prices in Aus a sweet relief. God knows how much I'd be buying if I lived the states or UK.

You would become unhinged in a US record store, I'm sure. I used to balk at used records that were above $5--and a +$25 new record would have to be super-deluxe to warrant a purchase.
The hardest thing about living here for me is the expensive records and beer, since records and beer were some of my main sources of entertainment back home.
Have you been to Heartland Records (by Queen Vic market)? I remember their prices being very reasonable--but I haven't been there since I moved there, so my memories are based on 2001 prices ($10 for used LPs, which was more like $5 USD at the time).

so i picked up my record today, it's on now: young galaxy. kinda cutesy to a fault but i dig it. forgot about the letter and the grudge. there was a note that said "hi d!," which kinda freaked me out because that's the initial of my real name that i changed 5 years ago. maybe i've just been watching too many horror movies. the clerk said uncle bad touch albums are only available from their
website

I didn't know where else to post this, so forgive me if this is annoying.
CHICAGOANS:
Brown Elephant Retail Store is having a Pink Friday sale, rendering every CD and record in the store $0.50. And, it's not just shitty thrift store music, either, there was tons of good stuff. I spent $15 for 30 items, including a Tom Lehrer LP, every New Pornos CD there is, some Big Mama Thornton reissues, some Hold Steady, a Black Flag EP, and tons of other goodness. Stuff I left behind included a couple Kronos Quartet CDs, Bjork, latter-day Public Enemy, some Pixies stuff, and a ton of solid classical LPs I regret not buying (Nancarrow, Tchaikovsky, etc). Sale lasts til tomorrow. Hit it up, ya'll.

i paid through the fucking nose for Finnish postal services to send me the new Oranssi Pazuzu 2LP _Kosmonument_, but it will be worth it. this record is incredible.
The new Locrian, _The Clearing_ is top-notch stuff too.
as is Elder's new record.

Just some of the albums I've bought recently:
Gotye -
Making Mirrors
Somebody said here a couple of months ago that either the
One From the Heart
or
Bounced Checks
soundtrack is really underrated. If it was the former, they're totally right.

Damn fine haul, reebty. One From the Heart is indeed some of the best Waits music in my opinion. Also really love that Boris record - been heavily trying to collect their vinyl releases lately.

I have a 2-disc set of One From the Heart, and since I have minimal interest in bloated DVD-extra crap, have never seen fit to even attend to the second disc, but I think it might be the soundtrack. I'll have to check that out when I get home (or google it now, but . . . nah).

also I had an hour to kill in Princeton the other day and so spent it browsing at the Record Exchange. I mostly bought DVDs (the Maya Deren collection quite cheap!), but did pick up that 3-disc set by The Homosexuals for only ten bucks--have only really played the first disc and kind of expect it to go downhill from there, but it's quite a peak from which to descend!
actually, that reminds me that I also picked up a Bush Tetras 7" the other day ("Too Many Creeps"), might as well find some Au Pairs and just make it a post-punk theme party.

and my timing was off (was coming from another show) so i only caught the last song. still killer, though. definitely take a look at this band.

e-guru, curious what you think of the Harry Smith AFM Vol 4. It's got some beautiful and/or mournful tracks, but nothing that haunts me as much as those first three vols, except maybe "On the Banks of the Ohio".
reebty, i keep meaning to check out Gorillaz. I saw maybe 10-15 min of one of their animation & music productions in the video store once and loved it. should i start with the videos or albums?
Here's the haul from my last Amoeba visit, plus one little vinyl shop in SF.
Glenn Jones -
The Wanting
Smog
Burning Kingdom
Lil B -
Rain in England
Laura Marling -
A Creature I Don't Know
Thee Headcoats Sect -
Ready Sect Go
Rolling Stones -
Some Girls
Flux of Pink Indians -
Uncarved Block

oh man, my lady bought me that on vinyl (it's only physical incarnation?) for my recent birthday, then we sat on the couch and spun it all the way through (I'm still on the fence, albeit in a fascinated way, about the BasedGod, but I think she exploits that because she loves him). it is . . . something.

That is much my assessment; I found plenty of interesting tracks on the latter discs but the stuff that keeps calling me back is the early material.
