just picked up Ryan Bingham and the Dead Horses' Roadhouse Sun on double-vinyl for . . . 33 cents. it was odd, a big bin of nothing but 70s funk and singer-songwriters, and this, in the basement of a coffee shop. eager to hear it, though maybe not before the Elton John and Rickie Lee Jones . . .

Brother Hawk - Love Songs
I know I gotta sound like a broken record on this, but YOU GUYS. This is crazy good. Hard to believe it was recorded in the same basement as Mice in Cars' last EP. Oh, and they got the singer's dad to throw some harmonica down for it. Do a thing, don't make me beg ya.
Downloading as I write. I streamed a couple songs, sounds good.

I've got a whole bunch of new shit as usual. But a few recent purchases stand out:
Eyes - TAQN
10" reissue of the Dangerhouse records 7" from '79. Bitchin
Castle Face Records Presents: Group Flex
That guy from Pink & Brown & the Oh Sees runs a label and decides to re-introduce the flexy disc. It's a comp as a small book with flexy discs as pages.
I don't super care about Sonny & The Sunsets. But I like that the guy invented a whole bunch of bands, recorded songs for them and released a 5 X 7" box set. I'm working my way through this now. It seems pretty golden. If only Sonny & The Sunsets were this good.
Ed Askew 7"
A hippy playing a Martin Tipple, which he described as a”10-stringed instrument shaped like a baritone ukulele.” Lovely weird shit from 1966.

Dr. Dog - We All Belong / Fate / Shame, Shame
Discovered two new favorite bands in the past couple weeks. Bought everything I could get my hands on!

What is the deal with you guys not talking about Stephen Malkmus' new album? Or is the search function just letting me down? It's awesome. I bought that and the Beirut album yesterday, neither of which I knew were out, and I like 'em both. Beirut is fabric bound like a book. Malkmus has possibly the second laziest etching I've ever seen on side 4 (second only to the etching on side 4 of
Real Emotional Trash
). Both came with download codes, which is nice.

While I'm at it, that new album by Efrim Menuck is pretty good too, and nobody has mentioned that one either!
I must be out of touch.

I've been refraining from listening to streams/leaks because I'm more excited than I thought I'd be, and I WANT IT TO BE SPECIAL. Whatever song I posted here a while back -- that's the only track I've listened to, and I only listened once or twice. All the reviews have been really positive and encouraging, and I've read some articles which have sort of made me fall in love with him again.
I am *very* much looking forward to picking it up this evening after work.

Volume 4 of Matthew Friedberger's
Solo
multi-album series thing arrived today.
Cut It Out
, the drums-only album, is the best of his 2011 albums so far.

Hmm. I might have to snag that one. The lack of samples on the Thrill Jockey website is a bummer though.

I am, with my usual entourage. You going?
I think we've pretty much decided never to pass up an opportunity to see Malkmus plus Jicks live - last time was saw them was such an awesome show.

Yeah, I think I'll probably get a ticket when I have the cash. It's the day after my birthday.

Damn it to fuck. No Malkmus for me today.
One record store in downtown Athens just went out of business this week. Now there is only one left that orders new releases, and somebody screwed up their Matador order this week and all the records got delivered to their Atlanta store. A month ago, I could've punished them by going to the other store to buy it. But not anymore. Monopoly's a bitch. Now I have to wait until Thursday.
Which means I'll be streaming it tonight on Spotify, thereby eroding the
quality
of what could've been a really fun & exciting record-buying experience.

For all of my obnoxious tech-forward cheerleading w/r/t the music bizzzz, I'll cop to deriving a not insignificant amount of satisfaction from the act of shopping. Less so from shopping online. Or stealing stuff.

The Pitchfork review is a little puzzling. Sort of complimentary and mean at the same time.
Quote
Competing with his younger self is definitely not a priority for Malkmus, who went through Pavement's reunion tour like he was punching a clock.
Huh? I don't think this is true at all. Sure, SM mouthed off about the unexciting prospect of a Pavement reunion plenty of times, but I was actually surprised by how much fun he seemed to be having when it finally arrived. And I thought there was something of a consensus about that.
Fuck a pitchfork anyways.

You know, pitchfork actually has a few good writers, but I only read their columns, and never their reviews. I think that's probably the best policy.

maybe they only saw the Vegas show @ Matador 21...he was definitely mailing it in on that one. 2 weeks' prior in Boston though...great performance.

I pretty much only read the news stories (for artists I'm into), the occasional column or interview, and the occasional video or Forkcast song. It's a really useful website in many ways, but I just don't read reviews much anymore. Plus, based on the few reviews I have read, I tend to prefer Popmatters reviews.

He seemed to be having a hell of a time at the Milwaukee show. The whole band was ... except Spiral Stairs. I actually felt bad for the guy, 'cause it seemed like the rest of the band was just fucking with him.
On the topic of the new Malkmus album, though: I don't like it very much. It's kind of boring.
