Have you heard the Starjob EP?  Maybe the most delightful 20 minutes ever recorded.

Agreed -- it was the first Frogs release I owned! And wasn't it produced by Billy Corgan (aka "Johnny Goat" in the liners), and released around the same time they did that weird split single with Pearl Jam?

I've also got a record flat of the artwork signed by both Frogs! Somewhere...

God, seems like it's been forever since I posted in the this thread. Here are some somewhat recent purchases.

I've never really gotten into the whole Holiday/Christmas music thing, but for some reason this year I got the hankering and picked up these.

So, if anyone has any Holiday music recs, throw 'em my way.

Should be getting these in the mail today as well!

Haha I have that split as a cassette single. The Frogs cover "Rearviewmirror" by Pearl Jam on their side.

I do not have this split, and this upsets me.  I will seek it out, to be sure.

Lou Reed & Metallica - Lulu

I couldn't resist. It's nowhere near as bad as the hyperbolic groupthink would suggest, and I actually think it works pretty well (as well as can be expected, anyway.)

Call me a drone, then, because I've heard only the title track, but it is every bit as bad as anybody could say.

I've only heard "The View," but I agree.

here's one, though: almost everyone agrees that "junior dad" is at least okay. i think it is really gorgeous, and the string drone at the end is mesmerizing in a kind of modern classical way? feel weird saying that because i don't know shit about modern classical

Silly me, I meant 'The View', of course.

You're welcome to love whatever overblown nonsense you like, of course.

That was a little caustic of me, but 'The View' is the largest musical trainwreck I've heard since, I dunno, Chinese Democracy or something. It's substantially worse than the last two Nachtmystium records, and my disdain for that disaster is a matter of public record.

edited: because, of course, 'Black Meddle' is pompous fuckwittery in two parts, not one.

chinese democracy is a fine record! kind of just enough of a clusterfuck to be awesome and interesting and strange and yet not at all justifying the mythology and wait. i like that about it.

You're not describing qualities of the piece itself, rather of the situation it found itself in / was a product of. Lots of artworks are interesting because of what they reveal of their circumstances, but that doesn't make them any good.

Like, if you wanted to find out about the realities of the popular music business, you'd do an intensive study of the records of X Factor / American Idol contestants. But that wouldn't stop me from unceremoniously chasing you out of my home if you tried to bring them in.

I mean personally I think if Chinese Democracy had come out in 1997 people would have thought it was pretty decent if a step down from Use Your Illusion (which had been a big step down from Appetite, of course, though no one ever really talks about that now). I think a lot of the reason Chinese Democracy is regarded as bad is because of those same extramusical concerns that lead Brad to find it interesting. It's not even as bad as a conventionally bad album, while Lulu is a good bit worse than a conventionally bad album.

You're a lot kinder to Chinese Democracy than I am. I guess the rub is that what I really, really want from a band is focus (drive and vision are nice as well), and while pinning down what exactly focus sounds like is really hard (except saying 'like the Fall when they're in the groove'), it is very easy to point to examples of music that simply does not have its shit together. Chinese Democracy is an example.

Though we're on the same page re: Lulu

Ahahaha I guess you have a point there, GI. But the phrase "glorious mess" exists for a reason, I tend to think.

And Brad, that was a funny post.

Since the page TSKS and I are on is 'I've heard quite enough, thank you very much', it looks like you're right.
