Speaking of bitter in the English sense, the Local Taphouse in St Kilda also has a beer store next to it, where I picked up a bunch of English beers.

The Harviestoun "Mr Sno' Balls" is the odd English ale meant to be consumed chilled.  I didn't much care for it, as I prefer my English beers at room temperature and Americans tend to make tastier beers for chilling.  Kind of ESB-ish, I guess.  Ended up tasting ever more flat as it warmed up.

Cotleigh's "Barn Owl", on the other hand, was a delicious ESB--heavy on funky malts with a vaguely mineral/floral finish like an English bitter should (if I remember correctly).

Next up is Hepworth's Sussex ale.  I'm still looking for a place that does cask ale down here, but Australians are even worse at over-chilling beer than Americans.

So my pa picked me up from the airport with a glass of whiskey waiting for me in the truck. I slug it down on the way home, only to find out when I get there that it was Woodford Reserve Master's Collection at $95 a 5th.

You should act like you're a baller and do that kind shit on the reg.

"$95 a 5th? Ugh. If that's all you've got. Do you have any soda or anything?"

Man I would like to try me some of that. Woodford's become one of my favorites.

I drank a flask's worth of Bulleit Rye last night and realized -- not for the first time -- how much I really enjoy it. It's not the best bottle of whiskey on my shelf, but for less than $25 a bottle, I'm definitely satisfied.

It was good. It didn't really taste like woodford. Less smooth (but still vry smooth) and packed a flavor punch. I think it might have more abv or something....  It was a little sweeter than woodford up front, very woody and a touch smoky in the middle, and finished with a healthy alcohol burn at the end.

I've tried the maple wood special edition Woodford, which was the year after I think. This guy I used to sleep with had a bottle, and he was going to save it indefinitely, and I told him to live a little and just enjoy it sometime, and next thing I knew he was opening it and pouring me some. It was good, but not worth the price IMO, unless you really really love maple maybe. Interesting though—was glad I had a chance to taste it, and if it weren't so expensive, I'd have probably bought a bottle for myself. Definitely different from the standard Woodford.

And yes, they are higher proof than the regular Woodford, though less than cask strength.

Also, Lexington Fest of Ales was tonight. Had a lot of enjoyable enough but not super memorable things, but my favorite was actually Avery's Out of Bounds Stout, which I hadn't tried before. Surprisingly appealing on a super hot day for a stout, and crisp and dry with a lot coffee-like flavor.

You know I think I've had all but a few of Avery's at this point but not that one.

I'm having the Unibroue Terrible right now. Dark strong abbey ale with some awesome intense fruit and dry wine notes. Just about everything Unibroue makes is a great, great value; I think this 750ml was $7.99 or something ridiculous.

Truth!  In fact, the gulf in quality between those and Ephemere makes me wonder if it was, like, a dare or something.

This one is seasoned oak so there's not a distinct flavor like maple... I don't think I'd like that.

I quite like it tonight.  I was pretty shitfaced last night when I got off the plane and I wasn't really ready for something like that.  I'd pay 50 for it.  Def not 95.

Here's some pics...

Cool bottle

As you can see it is considerably darker than my dad's bottle of Willett.

And for fun, pa's stash of Blantons caps. (he has another pile at their tx house)

I was up the liquor store tonight with the aim of picking up a bottle of Lagavulin 16. Did so but also decided to take a punt on something I've not had before.

Glenrothes 1991.
Very sweet with lots of vanilla. Probably best as a desert scotch if there is such a thing. More than two glasses and the sweetness becomes a bit much but it's certainly a nice bottle to have in the house.

I've had a taste of the Willett before. It is a beautiful bottle that makes it very hard to pour.

An appropriately named cocktail:

The Whistler's Paul McGee named his concoction "A Dick Move" after Stephen Cole of the forthcoming Lincoln Park bar the Barrelhouse Flat challenged him with beef stock. "He knows I'm vegan and thought it would be funny," McGee says. "I took it a bit further and decided to make a jellied cocktail using gelatin (more animal parts) and serve it in a cow femur. It should be 'enjoyed' by eating it like bone marrow. The cocktail turned out to be boozy, slightly sweet, savory, and had a bitter finish."

Yes, he tried a bit, as did our photographer, Andrea Bauer, a vegetarian. "This is sick," she said. McGee agreed.

Sharing because I thought it was funny--not the guy who challenged a vegan with an obviously animal-based product, but McGee's response. And also the result. As a meat-eater, that sounds pretty fucking sick to me too honestly.

I really like beef stock in a cocktail. The femur part is scary.

I am the most hungover I have ever been. I spent the morning and afternoon throwing up, and now I'm at work.

Worst September 11th ever!

After a certain point I start to drink a cup of water between every alcoholic beverage, a huge glass of water before bed, 2 advil with that glass of water and another water and advil upon waking. Also if you can get your hands on a pre bed crunch wrap supreme, that works wonders. I guess it's a lot of work if you're wasted but it's totally worth it. My friends usually start giving me water instead of drinks and feeding me whether I like it or not though.

anyhow, sorry you were so hung over! And lol at "worst sept. 11th ever" because, you know.

This sounds completely reasonable and responsible and so I will more than likely never take part in it while inebriated.
