thanks!
PS - that is certainly not all of the hip-hop that I listen to, just what I thought would be the most representative

Dipset generally is the funniest thing. I like it.
As someone who was somehow oblivious to Cam's mid-decade mixtape output at the time, what tape(s) would be the best place for me to start diving into this material?

I thought it was Nick Ink asking that question and I was really confused.

Yeah, I tried the hippy-hop, but I did not understand it. It's an American thing really, isn't it?

B. Dolan sounds like one of those guys who shouts out "real hip-hop" between every song at his shows.
ASAP Rocky is an interesting collision of influences. I'm looking forward to seeing what he does next.

he isn't. he has very little to do with real hip hop.
i think the new asap tape will be a highlight of the year.

There's something oddly enthralling about the Purple Swag video. I think it's the girl with the grill. Certainly my most played track of the past few days.

Among the top 5 hits for "purple swag": "Purple Swag is a fanfiction author that has written 6 stories for Pokémon."

I find that girl really disconcerting. I mean, white girl with a gold grill (that seems to be fairly uncomfortable) lip-syncing a screwed-up voice saying "nigger"?
Disconcerting is good, I guess. There's an element of race play, but it's like ASAP Rocky playing at being a young white girl playing at being a black rapper. Wheels within wheels!

Can we still do the funny lyrics thing because I remembered this gem last night from Nas' "Made Ya Look:"
Put her in the coupe so she can feel the nice breeze
We can drive thru the city no doubt, but don't say my car's topless
Say the titties is out.

The whole video is definitely somewhat uncomfortable to watch, but it works well given the somewhat ominous atmosphere of the song as a whole - in the context of that weird white girl grillshot, the "everything is purple" chant seems downright scary. But then the beat morphs into that wonder off-kilter chime thing, and the bicycle scene is awesome. Important as yr prezdent, indeed.
As far as racial politics go, I think Rocky is invoking white girl imagery in much the same way Wayne does with a line like "Got a white girl driver; couldn't do it much cleaner" (from Weezy's Ambitions) - are white girls the ultimate yellowbones?
Speaking of Wayne and funny lyrics, a classic that was running thru my head today:
Back to the ballin extravagant crib
On the toilet watchin Martin just laughin and shit
