not grand enough to make it to the awesome thread, but I am inordinately proud of myself for successfully re-wiring a light fixture.  this opens up all kinds of possibilities for actually getting nice looking light fixtures throughout the apartment.

what have you done right recently?

That's a pretty nice victory! Always nice to have a new tool in your kit, as it were.

I learned to make pintucks, which is a small-but-nice level-up for sewing.

I installed 2 light fixtures at my mom's over the 4th and once you know how it's quite easy and not scary at all.

I partied hard last night at a house party that reminded me of college. Small victories: winning at flip cup and beer pong.

it's true--it isn't too hard.  the wire nuts make it pretty straight forward.

Bernard, that blouse is beautiful.  I can't even imagine sewing something that intricate.  I do hope to have some time to improve my sewing skills.  maybe when winter comes.

I also hung a joist today.   the hardest part was getting the damn joist hangers, for which I had to go to a Home Despot that had no pedestrian access, even though it was only about 3 blocks from the subway.  because what kind of crazy idiot would *walk* to Home Depot?  just me, apparently.  and then inside I had to dig them out from behind a bunch of stuff and then pick the right ones out of a box of assorted metal things with sharp edges.  I feel like I have completed a Quest.

I met the ladyfriend of the guy I like and they made out in front of me and I didn't get jealous. Also we hung out lots at 4am and it was pretty sweet. Also I got some work done today and didn't procrastinate as much.

Nah, it was a room full of people. They were having drinks, I went up cos I saw the light on. They weren't majorly making out, neither, and me and guy-thing had mad chats with mostly just each other. Ladyfriend seems like a nice person and has read Orwell, so that's cool.

I lost 300g this week, which is more than I was expecting to, given that I have done bugger all exercise (actually I now realise I've ice skated for about 3 hours this week, but I think that goes in the awesome thread ;-)

Yesterday, I scrubbed the front of my oven for the first time in quite a while, getting rid of all kinds of caked-in crap behind the gas-control knobs.  However, some of the scrubbing-water seemed to get inside the gas-lighting mechanisms in the knobs, making them spark every twenty seconds or so.  No matter how much I tried to dry the knobs, the water seemed deep enough inside them that I couldn't remove it.

So: I made little sachets of calcium chloride and toilet paper, and taped them to the front of the knobs to draw out the moisture.  It seems to have worked!  After a few hours, the lighting mechanisms returned to their normal state.  Go science!

I brought my lunch today.  this is an extremely rare occurrence, both because I don't have a lot of time for lunch packing, and because carrying even a little extra onto the squishedness that is the morning L train is a pain.  perhaps I can aim to do it just once a week...

I keep tons of trader joe's frozen meals in my work freezer. not particularly elegant eating, but it saves boatloads.

I'm inordinately proud of having patched some torn jeans withour having them tear out the threads the first time I wear them, due to one or two failed attempts.

Got half of ausdemfenster's kitchen island back to my house, only incurred minor injuries doing so.  That counts as half a large victory, so perhaps one small one.

I cleaned and packed away all the stuff in the spare bedroom. We have an office now.

Is that a chalkboard? Or a big rectangle of chalkboard paint?

The latter. When we saw the apartment they asked if we'd like it painted and we said no, we thought it was neat. But it looks like no matter how hard they scrubbed, they couldn't get it completely erased. So now it's just kind of a partially-smudged black area.

If you intend to use it as a chalkboard and don't know this already, they work better with a thin layer of chalk dust on them. Probably not ideal in a home office for a number of reason, but The More You Know.
