The other one had run it's course.
Man remember when Psycho Mantis pulled that shit in Metal Gear Solid? I don't think I've ever been as engrossed in a video game as I was in MGS.

I love staying up all night with a new fresh game and a flat of man cans.

Evo comes but once a year. It was pretty exciting though now of course I am terribly sleepy.
Are you going to come play more gears before 3 comes out?

Here is an indication of why Dwarf Fortress is the most remarkable game ever made: from the (very entertaining)
Facepalm moments thread
on the official forums (the thread is over 2 years old and still running full bore), this guy describes a wonderful example of why the game's motto is 'Losing is fun!':
Quote
I had built a grand fortress with beautiful waterfalls to make all my dwarves happy, and a volcano magma defense system in place in case sieges got too nasty.
Ever seen what happens when your waterfalls suddenly turn into magma when the magma flows into where I initially drained in the water? I have.

I got Civ 5 on the steam sale ($25 or something ridiculous). I've never played a Civ game and man, that is some dangerous time sucking shit right there. I'd heard of the compulsive "one-more-turn" thing with these games but didn't realise how strong it is. I put in like 5 hours or something last night. I don't even think I was particularly enjoying myself in the last hour or so. I just wanted to see what happened next.

The other entries in the series are a little harder to get into, but they suck far, far more time. A little warning. You can get
Alpha Centauri
on Good Old Games for US$6 and see what I think is the finest example of the form - a little dated, but that is without a doubt the game I've spent the most time on of any, ever.

Yeah, I definitely spent entire summer days playing the WWII scenario on Civ 2. I didn't like Civ 5 at first but after giving it a little bit more time I'm actually a big fan. I remember not really digging Civ 4 at first either...

CivIV certainly took a while to get going, which gives me hope for CivV. By the time of the Beyond the Sword expansion, though, CivIV was basically perfect.

Played a little bit of Fall of Heaven, but never managed to set the time aside to try it properly.

My only beef with the Civ games is the complete inability to do anything cool once someone has already hit one of the victory criteria. Like, I spent all this time completing space shuttle parts, and now I can't blast off because I won a diplomatic victory? Lame.

Yeah, which is why I normally switch off diplomatic victory.

I should probably give the mods a try.
Then again, I also got Cities in Motion recently, which has plenty to do but which I cannot seem to get anything done in without just instantly losing tons of money.

Look what you get for finishing Dead Space 2 on hardcore mode!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBS86rAT4W0
sadly hardcore mode has no checkpoints and you can only make three saves.

I think there's an alpha centauri mod that's supposed to be pretty decent?

Alpha Centauri is my all-time favorite strategy game. Which is also the reason why I won't cave in and buy it again

I have a boxed copy of that sitting on my shelf :-) I won that, Populous and some other game I didn't care about in a prize draw on the back of a cereal box way back when. I loved both those games, though I never lasted more than about five minutes in Alpha Centauri. I used to love the big fold-out skill tree thing.

Fellow creators, the creator seeks! My inner life has been shaped more than I'd like to admit, I think, by SMAC.

I really miss the detailed presentation you got in Civ II and SMAC, with their long and lovingly produced movies when you built a wonder and the like, and I appreciated the sketch of a framing story you found while playing SMAC. What an awesome, awesome game.

I miss the simpler things, like developing nano factories and subsequently becoming game-breakingly unstoppable.

Oh... oh my
Blizzard announce that Diablo III will be online only, have a real-money auction house, and will have no mods
.
I mean, Blizzard have a lot of good will, what with the other two
fucking amazing
Diablo games, and their
unalloyed record of excellence
, but no mods? Really? And not even mentioning the pretty fucked up other things in that there report. This could go very, very bad.

The fact that it's online only is a total dealbreaker as far as I'm concerned. Also, it seems like a desperate pull-out/cut-your-losses sort of move.
Something must've went bad wrong.
