I had a rollicking good time with Rise of Nightmares last night. There's more plot than I expected. There's a weirdo low-budget eurotrash vibe. After the really deceptive prologue, you're thrust onto a surplus Soviet commuter train alongside Romanian tarot readers, gruff military officers, a pack of sneering German kids on their way to "the biggest rave", mischievous Russian ballerinas. Your character is a drunkard with an unhappy wife. There's an incident, and soon you're in a castle throwing surgical scalpels at undead mortician chicks in push-up bras and stockings. The motion controls feel hopelessly jacked at first, but they make a lot of sense after an hour or so. You get a workout going through a room full of creatures, beating them over the head, turning around, walking, running. I can imagine having a tough time if you lack physical coordination. You have to do some simon says shit.

But it has that undercurrent of sleaze, retro Euro b-movie shit. It's a Lucio Fulci game for Kinect, y'all.

You know, I did open a shit-ton of doors. There really is a lot of door-opening. Luckily I realized after awhile that I can just kick them open.

Other things the game made me do, miming via Kinect: wash my face in the train bathroom, swim across a pond, reach my hand into a bloody toilet, wipe leeches off my arms.

Finished Deus Ex. It was fun, but not mindblowing. 7.5.

I started watching the GOP debate then got annoyed and popped in Rise of Nightmares again. The stuff that happened tonight has elevated this thing into Game of the Year contention. It's going to have a Deadly Premonition-style cult following.

Chet and I now have a gears of war 2 xbox live savefile where we're stuck at "shoot the tower!" on insane AND a local splitscreen savefile where we're stuck at "shoot the tower!". We gave up on the xbox live one a while back because we actually made it through and then the next bit of the level didn't load and I couldn't be bothered to do it AGAIN, and this weekend we gave up on the local one because Chet was just desperate to get schooled at Halo and Street Fighter instead.

We'll get there eventually though.

He was the one who wanted to play it! I found it curious too. Hilarity did ensue, though. My highlight was Slayer on Reflection - I grabbed the sniper and then ran around for a couple of minutes not finding him, then turned the corner to run up one of the long side ramps and he was already waiting there at the top of the ramp with a rocket launcher - oh no! He cocked first, I cocked second, and in that exact second both Chet and his rocket launcher faced the wrath of having his rocket explode in his face, said rocket having been hit by my sniper bullet as it made its way towards me. Ridiiiiiculous.

Oh, and the low-gravity bits on one of the DLC maps. I just hopped around out there for a while one game while Chet hid, then I kind of mis-directed my next jump and just floated off into the void.

Bought the Gunstringer yesterday, can't wait to play it. The other day as I was finishing Rise of Nightmares and working up a sweat dodging tentacles and kicking skeleton men, I decided I pretty much only wanna play Kinect games and Halo and I'm okay with that.
