Man I burn something like 3800 calories riding back and forth to work. I eat something like 2500 calories a day. If I kept that up I'd lose what, like a pound every 3 days? Hardly seems worth it. Not to mention that those figures do not include beer.

Basically I'm saying be fat, fuck a diet

I am not going to start eating boiled chicken breast, I'm just not.

:-) I have some awesome recipes (including one poached chicken in soy and mirin) that I can point you at...Freddy's suggestion about reducing the amount of oil in things is pretty solid, and you can do the same with sugar. I used to use at least a tablespoon of oil, and now it's a teaspoon if that...(you want to keep some fat in your diet though, especially the omega-y fats). Blah blah weightwatchers blah blah. Like the workout conversation, it can get boring fast, unless you're in the zone, so I'll stfu now.

Evidently I pulled a muscle at some point while biking yesterday--I have no idea when; at around noon I thought I had a charley horse but it stayed with me and got stiffer & more annoying. It's really stiff & sore today. First time I've had this happen, though I did ride a shitload yesterday.

It's not that I can't think of ways to cut corners here and there -- I just don't want to. I like fat, I like sugar. Life is short. If I am endangering my health, I'll do something about it. If I just can't fit into my pre-collegiate wardrobe, I'll deal with it.

23 miles each way.

How long does that take? I have no idea how fast a bicycle goes. 3800 seems like a lot! I always get depressed at calorie loss calculators. I remember one especially brilliant workout after which I burned a total of one calorie.  Shocked

My spin bike odometer thingy says that I go about 22 miles in an hour, but that's without any kind of terrain or elements.

haha, my friends and I sometimes see if we can go over 25 and make the electric speed readers on signs blink as we go by. I have only been able to do it once.

Yeah, that's pretty darn fast. A lot of it depends on what kind of bike you have, but I'm pretty sure that if you're going consistently over 20 MPH for long bike rides, that's pretty good.

anybody ever hurt a hip flexor? i'm pretty sure that's what it is. well i was out camping for a week in MO and then i went jogging on a nature trail and then i got back into town and was doing 5 mile runs on a treadmill and man... all of a sudden monday morning.. BAM! i can't run. it's agony. i limp around. i've settled on using the cycle machines and elliptical at the gym which i can do pain free (except for the cycle - in the case of my ass). that shit is horrid!

I've had some minor hip-flexor problems before, but nothing as serious as it sounds like you've got. My younger brother did have some pretty extended hip-flexor problems when he was in high school though. Wish I could give you some good advice, but I don't know much of anything about what to do for that.

I've had some problems with hip flexors, though much more so with IT bands. Are you sure it's your hip flexor and not your IT band, for what it's worth? It's super easy to injure your IT bands or get them way too tight when running, if you don't stretch them out enough, and that can cause pain in your hips where the top of the band attaches. I had to go to PT and do a lot of yoga-based stretching there to get back to normal. Oh and foam rollers can be really helpful too—probably anyone who runs much (or just has these sorts of issues, like me) should have one of those and use it, since it's really hard to effectively stretch your IT bands otherwise. If you do in fact have tight IT bands, be really careful with how much you do with an injury like that if you don't want to screw up still more stuff—cycling and using the elliptical with tight IT bands is actually exactly how my problem got as bad as it did, and how I ended up with inflamed hip bursa (bursae?), and that was pretty awful.

can you describe wear the pain seems to stem from? more on the ass-side of your hip, almost deep femur/ass-cheek/hip pain?  Is it more on the side?  Is it in the front, just below your hip bone?  Something else?

Yeah I have a huffy cruiser from the 70's so while I've been told I haul ass, I merely haul ass "for that bike." Most of my other friends have sweet road bikes. Speaking of, I'm getting my bike back from the shop this week with a new (mismatched) fork. It was ready last week but I've been busy/hurt.

on the hip flexor tip: Jess' advice on yoga based stretches is right on. Hope your ass feels better. You are tough for camping out for a week AND jogging 5 miles in the woods!

It's in the front, just below my hip bone on the right side. It hurts to pull my leg in toward my stomach. I'm still flexible, like I can put my palms on the ground. But when I was getting into the bicycle, it hurt to raise my leg and stuff my foot into the holder-thing.

Well, I had my kid with me so I had to pretend I was into spiderwebs and shit, and Missouri backwoods. Like i was "Alright, let's take the dog jogging in the back woods today." I was scared shitless. My keys have a clip with a pocket knife and I had that shit mentally ready to pull out and cut some Missouris. I mean, in a land where they have combination bait shops and bars, you gotta be ready to go down fighting for your life.

It sounds like it's probaby not the IT band, then; I had ITB syndrome a while back, and the pain was closer to the knee, and hurt more going down stairs then going up them (so raising my leg in toward my stomach was comparatively fine).

Rest
Ice
Ibuprofen

That rules out a couple things.  Could be a stress fracture too though. No running. Try to lay low

I think my leg is finally getting better.. I don't really limp anymore. I been doing the elliptical and the stationary cycle thing, and God, I'm BORED of that. I set the precor cycle to 13 and cross country and pedalling it is like pedalling against a room of mashed potatoes that wants to fall on me (it goes up to 27 for hills), and I start this slow UGLY sweating. But it's so boring. I read my kindle while I do it...UGH!

If I look very closely at the exact right spot I can see a wee little bicep just peeking its head(s) above the soil.
