Yay Bernard! Go you! that 'getting muscly' phase is awesome. I need to do more of that, I'm feeling kind of spindly these days in my upper body)

Just joined the YMCA right down the street.  They have a sauna! And free classes! Winter is looking up!

I've been pretty regular with my exercise, and I'm actually rather impressed with the results!  Picture here:

I could probably do that everyday (run 9 miles) but is that too much? My legs were like fucking eels after, slippery and all funky chickeny, and I was like DAMN... but my heart rate only got to 180 and I was not too tired to go to the store and come home and cook a meal! Now I'm kickin' it. I usually run around 6 per day. I've never done 9. A marathon training website said do 2 long runs, like 9 miles, then do shorter runs between ... ?!

I've never run 9 miles before, but I've walked a lot, and this is totally where it's at!

I went to my first yoga class in two years last night.

Oh god my hamstrings.  It was a flow yoga class, whereas I have always done like, kripalu yoga, so I am not as good a knowing my limits when you are moving kinda quickly through the poses instead of hanging out in each pose for a good long time.

Long runs are hard on joints. Most sources I've heard of don't recommend more than one or two of those a week.
My girl is into long runs, but my mind (and feet and knees) just can't deal with the grinding monotony of it. We did 13 miles on Sun as part of her prep for a race she's doing soon, and I will not be doing that again.

Dif'rent strokes, friend. I'd rather play basketball guarding a dude with pointy elbows for three hours than run for two.

I'm glad I got into rock climbing because most other exercise bores me to tears. It might not be kind to your extremities (10 days on from a trip the scratches on my hand aren't that obvious anymore, but the ones I have on my ankles are just getting dark-coloured and ugly) but it keeps me very trim, with nicely rounded development. And I don't have to do the same thing over and over for hours at a time.

i love rock climbing, but my fingers always give out way before everything else, so that it's agonising to grip anything. any tips?

Climb more. Stretch your fingers and forearms carefully before and after you climb. When you take a bath, leave your hands outside the tub. Don't ever use moisturiser. Play guitar, or do any other activity which builds up calluses. For serious hand-strength, hang from something with your arms straight for as long as you can. If you can do a minute at a time, start adding weights, or move on to doing it using only two fingers (middle and ring, to minimise stress on any individual tendon). Grit your teeth through the pain, unless it's a pain in your tendons. Climb more.

(All of these are real pieces of advice I have received)

they sell those climbing grips that have a bunch of different finger positions you can just hang from, if you put one up above your door frame where you'd put a pull up bar or somethin. My old roommates and exbf were really into rock climbing, built a boldering cave in the back yard and had a thing like that.

wow, thanks! i just went outside and hung from my fence by my fingers for a full minute - typing this now, it's the exact same pain i feel after/during rockclimbing - i'll try keep it up! already play guitar, and have relatively rough hands - it's more the joints and muscles that hurt than the skin.
