it's boring, inert expression that is grossly aware of the reaction it will produce. it's incredibly cynical, which is made worse by how they project themselves as some kind of anti-cynicism parade (see: the tao lin post, emily gould) whose work is indistinguishable from their lives, and to criticize their work is to dismantle their personhood.

all of this

Re: The Guy Whose Book Davy Posted a Picture of, M really likes that book a lot and is intrigued by the guy and I don't really get it, but I guess that if anywhere there is a generational gap between the two of us due to our age difference, it's there. & I feel Brad on the whole "kids these days with their hippin' and their hoppin" aspect of it, in that it makes me wonder if I just don't Get It or whatever, but then I reconsider and no, I do in fact get it, and it's just insipid and disgustingly self-aware and it's like the whole world is a reality show or something, and I realize, This Is What It's Come To, this is the natural progression, this is culture eating itself and I want to hurl a hammer through Big Brother's big glowing face.

Oh also when Tao Lin compared Marie Calloway to Lydia Davis? Wow.

There are still a lot of people writing about ideas, though, and doing it well. I just don't think there are many to be found on Tumblr, Gawker, the Rumpus, etc.

No, I know you're right. I just get endlessly frustrated by it and I'm all sped up due to too much caffeine so if I'm going overboard with all my nonsense let me know.

Yeah, I'd say the Rumpus is probably the last place I'd look for new voices.

Careful, coldforge. I'm pretty sure Stephen Elliott said the same thing to himself before founding the Rumpus.

Regardless, I'd prefer a daily "overly personal email" from coldforge over Rumpmaster Elliott every fucking day.

Mine will be weekly, not daily. And I don't know who that dude is. Though I think I have a friend who writes reviews for him. Also, my literary journal will no be overly personal. It will be thorny and post-Poundian.

Nope, not at all. I think it's worth keeping in mind that while this style and mode of writing wields disproportionate influence due to its being the product of a lot of well-connected people in the country's biggest media markets, you can feel totally justified in ignoring it utterly. Unless you want to learn about Tao Lin and what he thinks about Motley Crüe or something. I know it certainly frustrates the shit out of me, and I wish I came across it less than I do, but my exposure to it will probably (lamentably) remain high just due to the experience of the new media pool. But you can filter. And while it's fun to laugh at, it's absolutely not worth getting worked up over.

I thought Richard Yates was pretty fascinating and well-written, but it also made me want to punch Tao Lin in the throat and punch the people who seem to assume hes the voice of my generation in the throat and well it kind of just raised my throat punching desires all around

Count me in. Collectively-conceived unpaid one-off publishing projects are the BEST projects.

I've got some musicky poems & collages that might fly.

RANDOM:

I got off the subway at like 9:25 tonight, and there was this repeating, regular-interval-but-somewhat-soft bong-bong-bong noise in the air in Greenpoint.  It sounded like it was coming from the north (maybe northeast?  that's where the refineries are), and it faded in and out, louder then softer, until it stopped altogether (I think) at 9:30.  I just came home and figured out that it was an A note.  No idea what it was, and I've never heard anything like it before.

ANCIENT ALIENS??????

Yeah that is really inexplicable and I can't explain it with regular science so it must be ANCIENT ALIENS

I mean, judging by the description, it's either Ancient Aliens or angels, and... (smug laugh) eh heh.... heh... we're PRETTY sure it wasn't ANGELS.

The sound did seem a little airlike, in that the attack was fast but not sudden -- more like an electronic chime or a wind-across-a-bottle note than a bell being struck.  I was wondering if it might have been something metal hitting something else, blown by the wind.  But I think the intervals were too regular to be wind-caused.

Who built the pyramids?  So-called "historians" say it was slave labor, working under the commands of the Pharoah.  But Erich Von Daniken has a different theory.

Odd, Nog. I'm reading what I guess is my first honest-to-goodness New Age book (it's for the pictures - really!) and this guy claims that we were originally bred as a sterile race of slaves for gold-mining aliens from the 3rd planet of Sirius. The proof of all this will be revealed when they discover the secret Hall of Records beneath the Sphinx, which will also reveal the secret room in the Great Pyramid where some of those Ancient Aliens are STILL ALIVE.
