Sorry if I cheesed you off fishjames, but after several years of working for an alternative energy company, I'm innately suspicious of anyone asking for donations because they "care about the planet more than profit." Still--sorry for bein a dick!

Fair enough, pollo. There's obviously a lot of greenwashing for fun & fortune out there. But an alternative energy company might actually turn a profit at some point - or at least burn through a federal windfall in a couple years (e.g., Solyndra). No one's going to make money off journalism, much less environmental journalism.

I guess it pissed me off mostly because I've known Scott for years, and if there's anyone you can trust with your news, it's him. He's also as big a Gandalfs fanatic as anyone here, in case that wasn't clear from my first post.

I'm offline the rest of the afternoon but will post some exemplary Grist stories in the news thread when I get back.

3. blogging doesn't turn a profit so it's, like, NOBLE, man!

While I don't think that fishjim has a bright future in non-profit fundraising (sorry dude!), a quick look around shows that grist is a 501(c)(3) registered non-profit organization, with a board of directors and a list of funders that include some large foundations that know how to do due diligence for their gifts.

Whether you want to give to them or not is your own choice.  But they are a legit organization. I like their Ask Umbra column, and the fact that say nice things about my alma mater all the time.  But I haven't given. 

Bitch Magazine is also a 501(c)(3) and so is the company that puts out Democracy Now.  Lots of non-profit/media producers out there.
