Yeah I'm not going to apologize for being annoyed when I click on what looks like a news link only to find a blog post in which a news story has been digested, paraphrased, filtered, re-synthesized or otherwise spat out through boilerplate net-snark, for God knows whose benefit. I suppose I'm the only dude who finds the Gawker model a waste of time.

For the record, I wasn't trying to be a dick to nny, I sincerely thought the tone of my post was grouchy at worst. Not "histrionic, unnecessarily bitchy", "pissy" or "needless hateful antagonism" -- but jm's clearly had some bizarre, creepy vendetta against me for quite a while, so I'm not particularly surprised that he'd go out of his way to characterize my responses that way. And, frankly, I've seen other longtime posters here get away with much, much worse. Only it's "cute" when pollo or cf (no offense to pollo or cf) are grouchy. Anyway, apologies to nny, carry on.

For the record I've definitely been guilty of what jm and others (rightly) criticized Thermo for, and I don't feel good about that. I have also voiced a very similar critique about Gawker's house style (which, I've argued elsewhere, is now seemingly the house style of the entire internet) and I utterly despise it, too. But you phrased that criticism very pointedly and accusingly at nny, which was uncalled for. Thassall

hahaha what.  no dude.  find a post of mine where I'm hating on you somehow.  Other than maybe in that thread where you're all "people whose parents make more than $100,000 are fucking entitled shitfucks" (and dude, by that metric, we should still be friends)

Like, say, this one, where I totally hate on Thermo in the first sentence:

And yeah, I liked Thermo.  I was kind of amazed by his freakout, and, much as in the case of TSKS, didn't expect him to actually leave in a huff over any of it.

and pollo:

I have also voiced a very similar critique about Gawker's house style (which, I've argued elsewhere, is now seemingly the house style of the entire internet) and I utterly despise it, too.

The number of things that you have leveled this kind of accusation at is staggering.  When I give you shit about that, it's because I don't understand what you do like.  I mean, AV Club?  You seem to like that, and I couldn't find any stylistic differences between any given AV Club article and most of the things that get you riled up.

I can't in good conscience disagree with that.

Tiger Beatdown, Stereogum, most of Tumblr, and yes, parts of AV Club, sure. The number of things is high because there are a ton of things that sound like that. If you like it and I don't (which seems to be the case!), that's all good, but I find it a little disingenuous to deny that it exists. Someone (maybe you?) posited that it's partially derived from DFW (which is plausible and also heartbreaking). I have some trouble believing I'm the only one who notices this particular set of stylistic affectations.

AV Club national = awful music coverage except Steve Hyden who is really goddamn excellent, hit or miss film coverage, really good tv coverage, so-so but sometimes funny news coverage (but always a little late)

I'm not completely certain how this tone is derived from DFW? I guess I maybe see it but not really

Really the only part of the AV Club that I read is TV Club, and Todd Vander...guy and Kyle Ryan don't typically write that way.

Alex Pareene kind of sounds like this on a bad day. It is a thing, I contend!

Yeah.  I think it's an issue of individual writers (and the spread from individual writers to the tumblsphere), rather than the entire websites to which [distasteful practice] is often ascribed.

Seriously though Steven Hyden's longer form music writing for AV Club is almost universally phenomenal.

i have definitely read the work of steven hyden and yet cannot disentangle him from what i understand is the av club house voice, a bunch of boring dudes who reference the simpsons.

the tone we're complaining about, meanwhile, is maybe not so much derived from dfw as it is derived from a bunch of un-self-aware twenty-somethings making shitty, lazy jokes on deadline
